There are some lengthy threads on the "scanning" forum regarding upcoming FCC re-banding. Since the DE system freqs appear likely to be affected, does anyone have reliable info on when such a transition might occur? There seems to be some confusion as to whether the Uniden/RS product line will accomodate the purportedly upcoming freqs in the 851-853 MHZ range....any ideas on this?

Hello,

NexToHell has been busy in the State. At a recent Smyrna Council Seat meeeting (or something similar), Nextel proposed replacing the Fire Company radios, free of charge. There was mention this would be a source of income for the Fire Company, if they accepted the offer.

UPMan, Are you located in DE? The 800ta website seems to only cite the quarter in which rebanding will be pursued in DE....hence the interest in a true local update from some of our DE forum members who are plugged in w/ DSP communications.

I'm sure all of us over on the Scanning Forum will be eager to hear any updates on RS/Uniden adaptation to the freq shift.

I would not buy any scanner at this time. Niether manufactuer has said they can comply with rebanding and neither can say what will happen with the new 700 MHz band coming soon. The few frequencies that are being used in 700 now are part of 800 systems, but it remains to be seen what happens with all 700 MHz systems.

Just want to alert you folks to a related statement from Uniden over on the "Uniden Scanners" board. Perhaps we'll hear something from GRE in short order.

response from rs

Thank you for the e-mail,

We are nearly certain that the PRO-96 will be compatible with both
legacy and rebanded Motorola systems. As you know, the PRO-96 includes a
"custom table" range configuration that allows up to six table
configurations to be defined for both Motorola and P25 trunked radio
systems. A custom table range configuration consists of a base frequency
(i.e., "Base = Channel 1"), a step size for the range (i.e., "Channel N
= Base + N * Step") and an offset value (i.e., "Offset the channel
number by this value").

In the current Motorola channel plan for the 800 MHz band, there are
four or five range definitions that allow Motorola radios to access
every frequency in the 800 MHz band. We know what these ranges are, and
have hard coded them into the PRO-96 and PRO-2096, so the radios behave
exactly like Motorola radios when trunking the 800 MHz band.

In testing the six custom ranges, we were able to successfully
trunktrack the 800 MHz Motorola systems by turning the custom range
feature on and hand programming the 4 or 5 ranges that Motorola uses to
define the 800 MHz band.

So...

Once the new Motorola bandplan for the reconfigured 800 MHz band is
known, it should be a very simple matter indeed to come up with the
correct base, step and offset values to make the PRO-96 and PRO-2096
track the 800 MHz band correctly on systems that have been rebanded.
With the exception of the actual channel tables themselves. We are aware
of what Motorola plans to do with the their 800 MHz channel mapping, and
are very confident that the PRO-96 and the PRO-2096 will be able handle
800 MHz rebanding just fine.

According to Don Starr and others I 've seen - the answer is NO. The only GRE/RS that may be free of this rebanding curse is the PRO96 and 2096.

That includes the new PRO-97 and 2055. They're in the same boat as the 93/95/2053 series.

Of course, things may change as we get closer to the drop dead date in 2006. So there's no need to panic .....

yet.

even the 396 will not be ready for rebanding out of the box. Uniden says it will have to be reflashed and then reprogramed when your area is ready. Don't rush into buying anything until others have made it work on rebanded systems.

Interesting situation......would guess that it is preferable to have the 396's initially come out without the rebanding factored in, since one might purchase the radio & place it into operation before the rebanding actually gets implemented by public safety. Many are wondering if a re-flashed Uniden scanner, geared toward the new bandplan, would even work with the current bandplan. Maybe it is a situation where one might wish to wait until the given region changes over before flashing the scanner?

When the firmware is updated, it will support Standard, Splinter, and Rebanded systems. You won't lose compatibility with systems that haven't been switched over.

Just wanted to again check in to see if anyone has good, inside information on how discussions between DE agencies & Nextel are coming along....and more importantly to see if there is any scoop on the precise timetable for frequency migration.

Hopefully DE with get a full compliment of frequencies when the switch to 700mhz occurs - I've heard that they need more than they have in the 800mhz spectrum.

I thought that the discussions for Region 1 weren't supposed to start for another couple of weeks yet :?:
