In the past when a boro FDNY dispatch freq goes OOS, they'll switch to FDNY Citywide like Master Po said.

Citywide 1 and 2 are used as temporary boro channels if there is a outage of 1 of them but what your referencing to is when there is atmospheric interference all FDNY Boro freq get knocked out and nothing works they will switch to there portable radios on the 8-Fire zone its a talkgroup on the trunking system. Its been happening often the 480mhz-500mzh been getting crushed in the north east

Take this with a grain of salt, I’m not 100% on this statement.

I was told by a buddy who works for FDNY that the last time they had a major outage on the UHF side, they were told to switch to the 7/800 side of dispatch, he said that they would be using 7/800 moving forward instead of legacy VHF dispatch. I’m not sure as to why and the conversation didn’t go much forward to that as he was sent on a call right after we started that conversation.

Kind of surprising that it’s on E for ICN, that was a bit surprising, I’m hoping this isn’t the plan moving forward as this would be sad for the fire buffs (past & present) like myself.

NO, they are actually going back the old VHF frequency's as there backup. Trunking is just there as another option
Thanks for the clarification! My comment isn’t to challenge or contradict what you’re stating, I’m just going off of word of mouth. Not everyone is super familiar with radios and how they work at the end of the day but I also do expect some knowledge, you know since you’re with a radio every day for (x) amount of years.

While shared secondary UHF T-Band (470-512) was ultimately not auctioned, TV spectrum was. This spectrum was then “repacked”. DTV television stations were built where none were previously. One example is RF 16 which is 482-488 MHZ. This occurred about 2021/2022. Signal levels in the NY Metro vicinity. rabbitears.info

Why is FD the only agency I hear having difficulty? Both ems and supression at times have nearly unreadable units while simultaneously the pd side on close frequencies is perfectly fine?

PD is mostly 470mhz which isn't really getting slammed like the 480 plus range which is what FDNY and EMS use.

What worries me is the fact we have some FD guys here and they're not chiming in. I know the PD scanning days are numbered but FD going E will really be a bummer for us buffs

I guess "us buffs" will have to find something else to do.

What makes you think that the "FD guys," as a group, actually care about the FDNY going encrypted? How many of them actually know what you're talking about?

I don't think the FDNY will go encrypted, since it will open up a can of worms with the press, other "hangers-on" (other than buffs), and members (especially Chiefs) who maintain "radio contact" even off-duty.

Obviously, just an end to a great Era

Because they usually chime in when rumors start going around.

Kinda sounds like deja vu from when PD E rumors started going around years ago. I think NYC firewire is run by some FF and buffs, they send out pretty accurate and timely alerts scanning FD.
