Hey folks (mainly prc_guy).

I have an RF Bay* LNA-300 that I've had forever, and hooked up power and ground by soldering to the feed through capacitors.

There HAS to be a better, cleaner way. Does anyone know the "correct" way to hook up to them? Pic attached.

That is the intended and correct way. That feed through is exactly for that purpose. I am puzzled to think you think that is a better way. Personally, I might put a 0.1 uf across the power there.

The way that unit was hooked up is typical. It also looks like Teflon wire was used. A mil spec method of first stripping the wire then tinning it, then tinning the feedthrough and ground posts, then carefully wrapping the tinned wires around the posts then soldering the wires usually lasts a long time. I sometimes add additional capacitance as mentioned above from .1 to 1.0uf.

You could screw a strain relief to one of the screw holes to hold the wires and take some strain off the solder connections.

Thanks guys,. I was the one who soldered them originally. I'm older and wiser now and like to do things "the right way(tm)" where possible. Good to know I did it correctly the first time.

I made myself a quick and dirty 300MHz dipole out of 3/4 inch copper tubing and its currently sitting in the attic. I'm able to hear the RCAG from Pontiac, IL here in Lowell, IN, 49 miles away. Pretty pleased with it considering how little time I spent. The LNA is going to allow me to feed a few PRO-2045s in search mode.

The random amazon Tram discone I bought is decent but noisy (lots of intermod from FM).

I really need to finish your X-Wing satcom antenna that you send me a phasing harness years ago, back when I lived in the UK LOL

David.
