I'm in North New Jersey. What is the best way to find who is on trunked systems. I know JCPL and NJ State Police are but any others. Is there a book to buy? Thanks Ron

Look in the rr database, NJ by county, you'll see the trunked systems listed. 50% of the questions you ask, the answers are in the database, you have to look.

Sussex County TRUNKED UNITS

I went to the database for Sussex County NJ but they don't list the trunked systems. Is there another way. Sorry, I'm new to this and just starting to find my way around here.

A lot of info!

That's a lot of info. think the State Police is there and looking for MEDEVAC. I think they go under northstar. Don't seem to find anything for them.
Are trunked systems always 800 or 900 MHz in frequencies? Thanks Ron

Being new to the hobby and to this site, I'm sure things can be a bit confusing, so I will attempt to help you out a bit.

I still don't see any trunked systems. Thought maybe medevac for sussex area. I didn't even see state police trunk frequencies.
This is what I got for the state police but there must be others.

You stated you "didn't even see any state police trunk frequencies". They're listed near the top of the page in the "System Frequencies" Section. Trunk systems use both frequencies and talk groups. For an explanation about how trunk systems work see here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trunked_radio_system
and here:
http://www.police-scanner.info/scanning/trunked-radio-systems.htm
You may have to read them a few times in order to understand it.

In both of them it mentions talk groups or talk IDs. Trunk systems use frequencies, but the users transmit over those frequencies via talk groups. Therefore, when programming a trunk system you have to program both the frequenies and the DEC talk groups that you want to moniotor. You don't have to program all of them, just the ones you want to listen to. Ignore the HEX talk groups. Those are for use for Motorola radios.

Getting to your question about Med Evac, if you look at the page for State Police Troop B from the RadioReference database, go to the "Zone B5" Section. The talk group for NorthStar MedEvac is there - 26832 - JEMSTAR AEROMEDICAL Northstar Helicopter.

Hope this helps you out a little. If you have any questions, post back and I or someone else will attempt to help you, or you can email me at nascarfan8832@yahoo.com. I'm not an expert but I can help you out with enough of the basics to get you going. The only way you're going to learn is to ask questions. We were all "newbies" at one time and I, for one, know exactly what you're going through trying to understand all of this.

DJ88 Thanks great stuff

Thanks for the great info.
I see the section State Police Troop B from the RadioReference database, go to the "Zone B5" Section. The talk group for NorthStar MedEvac is there - 26832 - JEMSTAR AEROMEDICAL Northstar Helicopter. I Don't know what you would do with this as I don't see any frequencies. Any thoughts?

Programming trunked systems is tricky.

You would want the Troop B system, so click on that... here is a direct link: http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=142

You will need to read your scanner's instructions for programming trunked systems. But the information is all there. I think you have a BC246? If you have one of these you should really program using a PC, it would be much easier.

Basically,

Create a new system.
You will need to select the type of system. This is a Motorola Type II 800mhz system.

Then you enter in the frequencies into a "site". You can program the frequencies indicated as control channel only, and be sure to select "control channel" scanning. Then you don't have to put all the frequencies.

Then you will program the groups, and that is where you will enter the talkgroups you want to listen to.

Very simple explanation, but try it.. then come back and ask some more detailed questions.

programed

Set the trunked frequencies into my scanner and it seems to work. I had to go to new system, mot and 800mhz than program the frequencies in. I scan it with my conventional frequencies scanning. It comes up with the ID 3280 as an eample when it stops scanning on a talker or another ID. Thanks Ron

In the settings for that system, you can select "search" or "scan".

If you select "search" it will search for any active talkgroup and play it.

If you select "scan" it will scan only those talkgroups you program in.
