• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Do any of you know of a list of the different firmware for the TK-8180 and what the changes are,
I am using V1.18 not sure how outdated that is, or if I should look into getting it updated or not?

Whoa. 1.61 is the latest version of the programming software. The latest version of firmware for the x180 line is 1.22.

The biggest change between your version (1.18) and more current ones is that MDC1200 signaling is finally supported in 1.19 and newer.

I'm not sure if there's a changelog for firmware versions out there.

One thing I had with some radios in 1.18 (and older) firmware is total radio OS lockup when receiving certain FleetSync signaling PTTIDs. As in, the radio would remain unsquelched after the transmission.ended, and all the keys on the keypad became unresponsive; the only solution was to cut power to the radio and restart it.

Hi jay thanks for the reply, do you think the old firmware is why it won't read from the radio as it don't support the mdc1200?

Um, robyice, not sure why NoFear2005 is saying that's the reason, but it's not. When I had radios with FW 1.18 and previous, and tried to write MDC1200 data files to them, the program would just say that the feature wasn't supported.

Do you have any radios that are successfully readable?

Are you using KPG89D? What version is it?

No. And have no idea why it won't read it just gives me a coms error. But from using a port monitor I see they are talking and the software stops talking to it when it receives the firmware version

And if I am using the wrong radio setting in the software I see in the comma from the radio as the last line of communication saying KPG092DV1.40. So that's why I was thinking I need the other software. Not sure if here in Australia if we use the North American or the European version. The kenwood dealer here I spoke to is less than helpful they don't want to help as I did not buy it from them.

I'm not familiar with the actual communications on the RS232 port, but if the radio is giving you that message, it strikes me that it needs KPG92D, version 1.40 or better. I wasn't aware there were two different software packages for the same model - guess I learned something. If I read the Google results correctly, radios needing KPG92 are EU region and/or "E-model 5-tone" variants.

Unfortunately I'm only familiar with North American radios using KPG89.

Good luck!
