The Rainbow fire was sometime in the late 90's. A group of people from Crandon are now building a new tavern where the Rainbow Club once stood. I hear its going to be a sports bar.

late 80's or 90's?? I don't remember there being anything there but an empty lot since at least 91 or so. We're talking about the NE corner of 8 & 139, correct?

Right! Up until last year, their old 6 foot satellite dish was still there next to the two white pines close to the Hwy 139 side driveway, but now even that dish is gone. I've seen logging transport trailers parked in that lot off and on for a couple years - possibly for staging. If I remember correctly, that fire took place the same year as the light plane crash back in the pickers northeast of Hwy 139 and 8.

I was barely able to receive 154.040 on that little hill in Cavour just off Highway 8 by the railroad overpass, but not on 139 at all from Hwy 8 up to just south of Long Lake. When I finally DID hear traffic on 154.040 again, it was something that had been going on for awhile, so I know that the repeater had been in use during my trip. I had no problems with 155.580 at all from Laona all the way up on 8 to 139 on Monday Nov. 05.

As a comparison, I can receive Brown County Wisconsin S.O. on 154.740 (in one of the receive-only memory locations in my Kenwood mobile) while in Florence or Iron Mountain on US 2, early morning and after sunset.

Yep, the northeast corner of US 8 & WI 139. I found a picture of a retirement party I attended at the Rainbow Supper Club dated July 28th, 1995, so the fire was sometime after that.

ok, now you have me puzzled. What exactly are you hearing on 155.580 and with what PL? Are you positive you are not hearing Oconto Co. with 900 unit numbers? I have heard nothing but an occasional EMS page on the frequency by Florence since early October. Also, on 154.040 I notice no signal issues anywhere within the county and the signal down at my place 6 miles east of Amberg is quite decent on just a Scantenna at 30 feet or so. In fact I copied them just fine on Hwy 8 from Goodman to Pembine in my truck and also from Pembine to Niagara and then west on N to Aurora so that is why am quite confused.

By the way, T&T Supper Club in Aurora.... oh my..... Quite possibly the best ribeye I have had in years and some of the cutest bartenders and waitresses to go along with it!! :D :D :D

No way to determine PL on my equipment (Commercially programmed Kenwood - not a scanner). The RECEIVE-ONLY memory locations in our Kenwoods are carrier squelch only in our equipment because we have several common frequncies to monitor in Wisconsin, Alabama and Mississippi... all using different PL or DPL.

I heard several transmissions durning my trip starting around Laona and nothbound where the dispatcher was mentioning specific streets in Florence, Aurora and another location in Commonwealth. This was NOT Oconto EMS. In fact, Oconto was dispatching for a rescue call in Gillett and the Florence repeater covered them while I was north of Laona on Hwy 8.

I guess if Florence County is satisfied with the coverage they are getting in the 'magnetic west' end of the county, thats fine. You might be in an area that is more 'line of sight' than where I was. If I remember correctly, the highest point in Florence County is just to the northwest of Lost Lake and I was to the west and southwest of that by quite a distance for most of my trip... (?????)

Finally, Florence Co has flipped the switch. I'm not sure which tower I'm receiving, (Long Lake or Fence), all I know is I'm receiving a much stronger signal on 154.0400.

You're Right!! I can receive them now from our temporary, seasonal location near Green Bay on the BC855XLT and with the beam turned north. It has to be the Tipler Tower because it is up on the ridge line much higher than the one in Florence. What a difference! I was also receiving something over in Iron County on the same frequency.

No way to determine PL using only a BC855XLT.

My 'newest' scanner is 6 years old and since there are no systems in my immediate area that are using P25 or other digital formats OR are worth listening to, I use what works for me without all the bells and whistles that have no purpose in my location.

I'll TRY to run a coax line from my VHF beam directly in to my service monitor and see if I can sort out your PL question that way... might be several days until I can get to that.

No problem, Rev. I was just curious if you were able to catch it. If it's big trouble don't bother.

I am from Ironwood, Michigan originally and I go back there to visit with the XYL and the kids and I have that frequency in my "Ironwood" program.

No chance as yet to get the actual PL, but now I don't think that what I heard last weekend is the one that you or I mentioned. I heard some chatter on 154.040 from Florence County yesterday afternoon and then the other transmitter as well - weaker than Florence. I recognized the location that the dispatcher mentioned on the weaker transmission... it was the DPW repeater in Baraga, Michigan - only two counties north of Florence and within the beamwidth aperature of my beam pointed 345 degrees. So, I guess that sort of pins it down.
