Lindsay,

I routinely see posts as "new" even when coming back to the site after an hour or more.

There's a vB setting called "Time-Out for Cookie" (vBulletin Options, Cookies and HTTP Header Options, Time-Out for Cookie). The vB admin control panel defines this as "the time in seconds that a user must remain inactive before any unread posts are marked read. This setting also controls how long a user will remain on Who's Online after their last activity".

Do you have this set to some large amount of time? I think a setting of 15 or 30 minutes (900 or 1800 seconds) would be more appropriate (though nobody will ever be able to agree on this one  ).

How true! :)

Personally, I'd like it set to Never. If I haven't read it, why would I ever want it marked Read?!

I get caught at least once a week by this. Halfway through reading mail, I have to leave for some reason (it sucks being on call 24x7 sometimes!)... or I get into reading something on a site someone linked in a post, or.... any number of reasons... and before I get back to the rest of the New messages since the last time I was on, they're all marked as Read and I have to spend a lot of extra time and effort to figure out what I've read and what I haven't.

Or if you want to check a couple messages in the morning, but read everything else in the evening... forget it. Anything you don't read is gone.

Did I mention this drives me up the wall?!

Please, please, please... I'll even send the kids over to wax your car.... set it to Never mark as Read!!!!

Thanks!
Bob

Hehehe....

I'll keep an eye out on this issue... it is one that might need tweaking... 60K plus users all have their own ways of sifting thru the forums...

  :)

I agree with bsavery on this. There are times when I'm really working to provide the best possible answer to somebody's question. This may involve going to another website, checking files on my own computer, then cutting and pasting all the info into my reply. Then, after getting through, I find that everything has been marked as read in all the other topics. Since I'm already having to use the dropdown menu to mark all topics as read in each forum when I get through (to get rid of the forum new topics indicator), I don't need the automatic setting. It just causes problems.

My two cents,
Mark S.
