Hey Everyone,

While sitting here at work at 0300...I was fooling around w/ the Pro-96 and decided to do a SEARCH in the POLICE / FIRE freq range. I was surprised to hear what sounds like a PD operating on 460.400 and 460.500 in the DC MODE. When the transmission was active on the frequency, I pushed the MODE button through DC, FM and CT and it would only let me hear the communications while in the DC mode. I can't for the life of my figure out what dept I am listening to. Plus it was a little weird to hear a digital comm in the 400mhz band. I am assuming that I might have been listening to a 400 re-broadcast of an 800 digital system?

Any thoughts and / or does anyone out there know what I might be hearing?

There are alot of digital comms in the 400 mhz band. Most though I think are government. I know that Langley Air Force base uses a UHF digital system as does the Naval Base in Norfolk. Ft. Lee in Hopewell does as well. I am sure there are lots of others too.

Hope this helps

Hello,
There was a huge band opening Tuesday Am. I was able to track Washington DC's APCO25 460Mhz system from Wilmington. (Have in the past too)

Those freq's you mention are DC freqs. Here they all are. Control channel is usually on 460.1

460.0250 460.1000 460.1500 460.2000 460.2500 460.2750 460.3250
460.3500 460.4000 460.4250 460.4500 460.4750 460.5000

You can get the tropo forcast from the following site
http://home.cogeco.ca/~dxinfo/tropo.html

Generally more exciting in the summer months around here.

Dave, that's not necessarily true. Anytime there's a big weather change, strong storms, or a front becomes stationary with a warm air layer, it's possible that tropo might come into play. That site you mentioned is one to keep handy; you might note that Sunday and early next week there might be some moderate conditions for skip.
Just ask the hams that do a lot of 2m/432 skip work; they'll tell you that any season is a possibility for tropo, not just summer.

Hi,
I Scan corrected ;)

Briefly I'll recall a night last summer when I was in Avalon NJ, I clicked on my radio to listen to NJSP but accidentally activated the NCC Delaware bank and it locked on and tracked! Some serious tropo to reach up to the 800 band that night!
Did I mention this was with the duck antenna?
I was also able to track the Philly 800 system..That's some 60 miles to the nearest transmitter(s) for these systems.
