Hi,

I have a US model Yaseu FT-60R that must be charged in the cradle. The cradle is model SBH-13, with an AC adapter model PA-48B.

The PA-48B DC output plug fits the radio directly, and the radio shows 11.7V when plugged into it (close to the nominal 12V output of the PA-48 AC adapter). The manual however on page 9 states that the PA-48 is not designed to be used to directly power the radio (despite being the correct plug and within the 6V-16V accepted input range). Does anyone know why Yaesu would warn against using the supplied AC-DC plug to power the radio via DC?

There is a note saying that the PA-48 "may contribute noise to TV and radio reception in the immediate vicinity" - is the "not designed for use" just a disclaimer, and assuming no noise is present, would it be fine to use this for powering the HT directly? Or do I really need to go an find another DC power source for directly powering this radio when used at home?

I own an FT60r but haven't taken that close a look at your issue.
My best guess:

When I looked up the PA-48B, its rated for 110 input and 12vdc @ 0.6 amps output. That means its delivering 7.2watts (12v x 0.6a) of power.

When I looked at the radio's manual, it says it pulls 1.5amps @ 7.2v on the 144 band and 1.6amps at 7.2v on the 440 band.
1.5 amps x 7.2v = 10 watts on the 2 meter side.

That means the transformer, which is designed (sized) to power the charging station, and which is rated for 7.2 watts of power, is being used on a device that wants 10 watts of juice.

You might burn out the little wall transformer.

So knowing the power requirements, it would seem that the radio pulls 5 watts of juice just to run its own brains while transmitting.. add to that the power being transmitted (up to 5 watts), and we get a picture of what's happening.

It means it is only capable of charging the battery. It is NOT capable of powering the radio. Keep radio off while charging.

Yaesu sells DC power cords and cigarette lighter cords which are designed to operate the radio at full power. The wall wart chargers are just that - chargers. Newer radios are supplied with switching power supplies for charging - no transformers.

Thanks - totally overlooked the ability of the PA-48 to supply the desired power.
