I have the Yaesu ft-857d vhf/uhf/HF transceiver. Recently I added a mfj-969 antenna tuner and a 20m end fed half wave dipole.

So the issue I'm having (one of several now) is that occasionally when I try and transmit on HF, the fast tuning feature (little running man on the display) will turn on and sometimes off without me doing so either by the button in the mic or via the power button secondary function.

I thought it maybe the extension cable and coupler for remoter mounting I was using to give myself more wiggle room when using the mic. So I unhooked it and fed the mic cable back directly into the radio. This didn't seem to have an effect on it.

It doesn't happen every time either and I haven't noticed anything in particular that maybe causing this.

Any suggestions, there is nothing in the manual that would led to suggest what this could mean or be caused by.

Check LOCK. Lower button on right side of tuning knob.

Lock is off. And if I turn it on then it does prevent the issue. I'm just curious what maybe causing this issue in the first place.

Unless you meant something else by checking the lock.

I have. Nothing in the text mentions why it would activate and deactivate by itself during transmit. I.e. With no Input from the user other then pushing the PTT and speaking into the microphone.

As well, check function of various LOCK: 22, 31 again for LOCK and FAST, 39, 46, 95, 106, 125 [especially if have the MH-59A8J mic].. The one on the mic might explain it more, but read all these pages to ensure proper functioning.

Try turning your output power down to 5 or 10 watts and see if it continues. You might be getting stray RF into the unit. In SSB, your RF power varies as you speak, so the on/off/on/off might be in sync with voice peaks.

How far is your antenna from the radio?
Do you get the high SWR indication on the display?

This makes a lot of sense. I'll give it a shot when I get home. Thanks.

The other thing is touching the tuning dial while in unlock cases different things. I see if I am in Memory/Channel mode, the running man and lock each blink alternating. If lock is off when sitting on a memory channel, and move large tuning knob it will change to VFO. So, I would play with these in different situations to see if this helps. Sorry, late at night and didn't fully understand you first post.
