Yaesu: FT-897D audio in through DATA jack

I am attempting to build a portable FT8 setup using a Raspberry Pi connected to my FT-897D. I'm most of the way there - CAT is working fine (WSJT-X is successfully selecting the frequency on my rig and putting it in transmit mode when I select the TUNE button), and I'm also receiving & decoding FT8 signals. However, my audio output isn't getting to the rig (when I select TUNE in WSJT-X, the ALC and Power indicators on the FT-897D don't move). I've verified that there's audio (loud & clear!) coming out of my C-Media USB audio interface by connecting an external speaker, and I also verified the wiring of my HamDapter DC-11F audio interface cable from the audio connectors to the DATA connector (audio out connector tip to pin1 & shield to pin 2). The setup is depicted below for clarification.

So it seems I've narrowed it down to the rig itself. I've got MIC SEL set to CAT (I tried NOR & RMT to no avail), and DIG GAIN set to 100, and DIG VOX set to 0. Are there any other settings/troubleshooting steps that anyone can recommend? Thanks!

Do you have the proper Line In/Sound Out selected in WSJT-X? I found that is a big thing people miss.

I think I must have the correct audio device selected, because if I hook up a speaker to the UGreen USB audio adapter output and hit the TUNE button, I hear the FT8 tone.

Try menu 071 1200 packet audio level or 072 9k6 packet level

Edit...if dig gain is 071 or 072, 100 might be clipping. Start around 20

I tried all different values for menus 071 & 072 without success. Then I simply gave up for a long time. I'd like to revisit this now. I wonder if there's any way I can troubleshoot the DATA port input on my rig (I'm a professional RF electronics technician with advanced troubleshooting tools at my disposal)? Anyone else have anything else I can try before I completely give up (and maybe buy a Windows laptop instead)?

Try a different mode in a different band....APRS on 144.39 for instance.

I tried multiple modes in several bands - the radio simply doesn't see the data signal coming into its rear DATA port. However, I just implemented a workaround that WORKS - I built an adapter so that I could plug the Pi's audio out into the Yaesu mic jack instead of the DATA jack, and it's working beautifully

Just change Menu entry DIG MODE (038) to USER-U. That works for me.
