the charging is very strange on the ft3d, I got mine at 9.30am

new put in charger cradle showing red 2 1 bar 2 hours 2 bars
4 hours cradle still showing red charging?
took radio out of cradle turned on radio battery full
put back in cradle green light came on full charge
very starnge

What‘s the battery voltage? If it’s less than 8.2 volts, it’s not completely charged. The desk charger works better with a 12 to 14 volt supply, the SAD-25 wall wart that’s normally supplied is 10.5 volts.

When I turn in the voltage is 8.2volts. the battery display shows full all green bars.
I have the rapid drop in charger, and power leads from FT2 not tested but the wall charger seems to out out more than the FT2.
Using the FT3 wall charger, when plugged in radio and I turn on the start up bolts displayed 14.2v.
I take it that that must mean it's fully charged.
I don't know about any one else posting about this, But the drop in charger for my FT2 Power wall cable fits my cradle, but the wall plug in power lead from my FT3 will not plug fully in cradle it sits on the edge of the sockets power connector, it don't sit flat in hole. It's off set, not willing to cut a little out to let it sit flat.

Thanks for the post, on start up it showed 8.2v I will keep a better on on it.
I am using the drop in cradle, should I use the wall plug in cable for the FT3 in my drop in charger and if so is it ok to charge the FT2 in cradle with the FT3 power lead?
Thanks

I don’t see any reason it wouldn’t work. The desk charger is controlling the charge, not the radio. I’m not sure whether the desk charger uses voltage and/or a thermal circuit to determine the completion of the charge.

Either wall charger should be fine using the desk charger.

I don’t know enough about the other wall chargers to recommend charging the FT3D directly with any other wall charger than the one supplied. My suspicion is that the one for the FT2 would be okay.

Yeah I thought it was weird that it would say 'Now Charging' and it would take forever and then when I got back to it hours later, the screen would be black. I picked up the slim battery a couple of days ago and did see this one move up 3 or so bars. Then this time stayed in front of HF. It eventually did say 'Complete'.

On a side topic, does anyone noticed while charging and while transmitting or listening, that the FT3 will just reboot? I just noticed that today. Normally I have the FT3 off when charging.

As you found out, don't do that. The charger does not supply enough current. I believe with those radios, or as an accessory, there is a wire with a proper plug that goes into the radio for power. One can connect the wires (Pay attention to the polarity and some fuses would be smart) to 12 volts and TX/RX no problem, or use the vehicle power port plug accessory for TX/RX, which is the safer option.

I personally use the desktop charger as it is faster and just put the battery in there without the radio.

Thank you, yeah I won't do that anymore lol. I may need to get a desktop charger down the line. I'm just using the cord charger it came with...

This subject has been discussed extensively on other lists for months. The consensus seems to be that the charge "meter" does not progress as expected and once the battery reaches full charge, the screen goes off. The voltage readout seems to be the best indicator of charge.

If this helps others that own the FT3DR, I just got mine new this Wednesday 8/5. I plugged in the supplied charger immediately after attaching the belt clip to the included 2,200mA battery. It displayed the charging bar that did go to 4 segments but later dropped back to 1. I let it charge overnight as is. The next morning, I powered the FT3DR up and it displayed a full battery at top left of the display. I used the radio, setting options and just getting used to it. The battery was nearly drained after about 14 hours of intermittent use. I plugged it in and the radio off charging meter started at 1 and did progress upward as expected this second charge session.

I think another poster said it did correct itself after the first charge/discharge cycle. My findings are the same. A bit quirky and worrisome, but overall not a big issue I suppose. Hope it helps others.

I have a different but somewhat topic related question. If I should post my question separately, I hope someone will let me know.

I purchased the cradle, but I refuse to spend ~$40 for the power adapter ($30 for the wall plug and $10 for shipping). To take full advantage of the rapid charging cradle, the adapter must output a specific voltage and current. Yaesu does not publish the specification requirements for the cradle or the specifications for the adapter. Can someone who owns the adapter please tell me the output specifications? Thanks in advance.

Hmm...on the bottom of my CD-41 desktop charger it has a sticker that notes for the input: DC 12-16 V and 600 mA. I thought I was using the Yaesu AC adapter but...it appears I have been using whatever AC adapter model number SP-888 for years and it works fine. Output is 12v @ 1A, which is why zero problems. A quick search and Amazon is selling the exact same model for $11 (looks exactly like mine), except my cord is around 28".

Before you buy anything, your handheld should have come with one of those Yaesu AC adapters for the rapid desktop charger.

FWIW the Yaesu FT3D that I bought through Ham Radio Outlet this month came with the SAD-25B charger in the radio box. That sounds like the 25B variant is the stock issue IMO.

And I have to say my FT3D is back to showing one segment and charging when doing it as internal charging. I have the quick drop-in charger and a second 2,200mA battery on my wish list. Likely I'll do this in October as an antenna project is on for Sept.
