Coming from a person who travels constantly, 190 cities last year in multiple countries, I see no value in the GPS function. It is a nice marketing gimmick but really how often are most people out of their home market? I have operated in every major market in this country, and many that are not even on a map. It takes a few minutes to do a RR dump of the area I am in, of the targets I want. Not to mention allot of the things advanced users what to listen to are not listed in any published data base.

I can run my 500 in muti-site and get to the same end traveling across my state with our state wide system.

I am not knocking Uniden. Home Patrol is a nice entry level unit. It certainly takes all the thinking out of the hobby. If that’s what you like, buy them up. GRE did the same basic thing, -GPS / digital, with the 107.

Again I say…… If Uniden, or any other manufacture, wants my money they have to surpass the performance and functions of a 396XT / 500 for trunking & general scanning and an 8200M3 / R20 for advanced targets.

You must have a small state then freqhunter, there isn't a scanner on the market that can load my statewide systems sites AND all the TGIDS, not even my 600 can do it. They also can't load all of the sites and TGID's from any of the surrounding statewide systems either. And the 600 wastes lots of time scanning sites it can't recieve, those out of range. When I travel I use the GPS on the 396's and 996 to turn sites on and off so it only scans the sites that are in range. It works great and they pick up alot more than the 600 does because they are not scanning sites they can't recieve.
A scanner like the HomePatrol would be a great addition since most of my trips are last minute deals and I don't have time to sit around downloading setups. I can jump in the car or truck and go on down the road with zero setup time, whereas now I have to mess around trying to decide what I want and how to put it all in so I can get the most out of the radios that are going with. Worse yet at some point in the trip I'll have to stop and change the programming which wastes drive time and gas, and also means the laptop has to go as well. I have to stop three times just go to my dads home and reprogram the scanner(s) for the stuff I want to hear. Thats pretty rediculous and a unit like the HomePatrol would solve all those issues.
When I travel I always have 3 to 5 scanners with me, with a HomePatrol I'd have maybe 2 and NO LAPTOP to haul around as well.
