I’m in the same situation, have (7) WS-1065/RS-PRO197 scanners that work great and I have enjoyed listening to the action for several years but with the change to NXDN, the action has left the capability of a somewhat reasonably priced scanner to receive.
Do you need all seven of those scanners? Could you consider selling 2-3 of them and using the money to buy one more modern scanner? Just a thought. You probably have about $1400 worth of scanners, maybe more.

I think a few places in VA are using nxdn scrambling. I’m not 100% sure, but i believe it doesn’t count as encryption. One of the newer aor receivers should be able to decode it.

Right! In hindsight,(based on the direction agencies are now taking), I am stuck with technology not compatible. I have one in each of 4 vehicles,( from my days as an active member of the FD) and try to keep one or two new ones on hand to sell to a friend or referral who needs one. I really never expected our rural area would switch to a system not compatible with these scanners so quickly.

One idea to thin the herd might be to go from having 4 mobiles to one handheld that goes in whichever vehicle you are driving. Keep the antennas and hook up the handheld as needed. You could maybe keep one or two mobiles in the vehicles you use the most, and the handheld for the other vehicles. I use a handheld in the vehicles I drive.

Yep, I guess it’s time to regroup. Guess I need to ask myself just what it’s worth to be able to continue to be able to keep up with local events on the scanner. With more agencies considering switching to digital NXDN, the local market for non-NXDN scanners is diminishing. I certainly wouldn’t sell someone a scanner without telling them the local services that are outside it’s capability.
Kinda wish now that I had went the Uniden route with scanners and software.

Folks are selling Uniden 996P2s frequently as they upgrade to other models that handle simulcast better than the 996P2. The 996P2 will handle NXDN with the upgrade purchase from Uniden. If you catch the right deal you can easily be under the $400.

Reiford, I have not had a chance to look for a used 996p2 for you but I haven't forgotten. Just have had some health issues crop up with both my folks and in-laws that have taken away my time..

SDS-100 picks up Galax Fire and PD which is on NXDN. However it is the worst sounding system I have ever heard. Dispatch is loud and the units are hardly understandable. Sounds like the dispatchers are super hungry and chewing on the mic.

Grayson has been using a p-25 in some units they call it I-OPS but I don't hear them on it very often they are still using low-band. Grayson is changing over to digital soon. according to the last board meeting (youtube) they are considering p-25 or DMR

I suspect they will all follow in Wythe's footsteps and pay for the encryption licenses as soon as the system passes the initial trial period and they accept it, as the encryption unlocks for the radios are almost always non refundable.

Maybe they will continue to use cellphones and other apps for the things they keep from the public and at least let us listen to dispatch. but something tells me that is wishful thinking. on a side note, listening to state Stars. when county requests help it sounds like an absolute cluster-F because the agencies cant talk to each other.

Thank you for the update, appreciate it. I saw the Gazette article about the radio systems report given at the last Carroll County Supervisors meeting. My personal takeaway is that it is a bad time to be in possession of 7 WS1065 scanners that do not cover NXDN or P25 phase II! These have worked great for several years but won’t be of much use once all the local services switch over.

Hopefully they wont go encrypted. Maybe sell them while you can still get some money for them and get a SDS. I will probably ride over the the sheriff and see what's going on. Grayson has no idea what they are really getting into with digital and this terrain. The salesmen will promise then upcharge the crap out of them in change orders just to get a working system.

I'm serious Galax has a terrible system now, Officers and Fire are always having to repeat what they say. once the new wears off they will realize the mistake. But I'm sure they will throw money at it and the salesmen will keep cashing the checks. I do believe the Galax system is being streamed on broadcastify

I drove through Grayson the other day on 58.. I don't think I heard Sheriff once. Obviously didn't hear Galax either.
