• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a Antron 99 with the base at 30' in the air. 50' of RG8U Foam running to my Galaxy 959. On channel 1 the SWR is 1.2 and on channel 40 the SWR is at 2.0. Is this ok or do I need to adjust the tuning rings on the antenna? Do they need to go up or down? Thanks in advance.

Well I managed to get them down to 1.0 on CH1-33 and 1.2 on CH34-40 So its all good now. But the rings are almost all the way to the top now.

SWR

If you are using a standard CB SWR meter, the results can vary from meter to meter. A 1:1 ratio is almost impossible to really achieve, especially over a range of frequencies. Even getting below 1.5:1 is considered good for the overall band width. The following link will give you some good info. SWR and TRANSMITTERS - What is SWR all about? Making Sense of SWR Readings

I assume you are talking about the SWR reading on the radio. Those meters can be be somewhat inaccurate. A Bird 43 is the most accurate, but for your purpose the meter on the radio will most likely be close enough. For me I would still check it with a stand alone meter. Like a Workman, Opek, Astatic, or Para Dynamics. As a bonus, the Para Dynamics test center with the three separate meters, will also work on 2m if you ever happen to decide to get your ham ticket

Ok just checked it with my Workman HP201S and it shows 1.4 on Channel 40 and 1.5 on Channel 1. Thats using a real junky jumper the only one I have. The 1.0 and 1.2 was with the RG8 running directly to the radio. The meter on the radio also showed higher with this other meter hooked up inline.

This meter checks power, modulation and SWR, from 25mhz., all the way through 2m

Notice, I did not mention a Dosy. For what you pay these days for a Dosy, you can buy a decent used Bird 43
