Wall Collapse at Barton Mine

BARTON - A "high-wall collapse" was reported at a Barton strip mine site at 10 a.m. Tuesday, trapping two people and the heavy equipment they were operating at the time.
Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration officials were on the scene to lead the investigation of the incident.
Initial reports from the Allegany County 911 Joint Communications Division indicated first-responders from numerous companies in Georges Creek and outlying areas responded along with Maryland State Police Medevac helicopter from Frederick and Maryland Bureau of Mines personnel.
Specially trained structure collapse team members from the Allegany County Hazardous Incident Response Team and specialized rescue teams from Montgomery County and Fairfax County, Va., were also called to the scene on Michael Road at the Tri-Star Mining Co. site.
At about the same time, Medevac helicopter from Cumberland responded to the Circleville area of Pendleton County, W.Va., where a downed aircraft pilot had reportedly been located late Tuesday morning.
