Wall Collapse at Barton Mine

Jeff Alderton
Cumberland Times-News
BARTON - A "high-wall collapse" was reported at a Barton strip mine site at 10 a.m. Tuesday, trapping two people and the heavy equipment they were operating at the time.

Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration officials were on the scene to lead the investigation of the incident.

Initial reports from the Allegany County 911 Joint Communications Division indicated first-responders from numerous companies in Georges Creek and outlying areas responded along with Maryland State Police Medevac helicopter from Frederick and Maryland Bureau of Mines personnel.

Specially trained structure collapse team members from the Allegany County Hazardous Incident Response Team and specialized rescue teams from Montgomery County and Fairfax County, Va., were also called to the scene on Michael Road at the Tri-Star Mining Co. site.

At about the same time, Medevac helicopter from Cumberland responded to the Circleville area of Pendleton County, W.Va., where a downed aircraft pilot had reportedly been located late Tuesday morning.

Well it would be nice when FOX NEWS put it on their website they could get the location right. At the beginning of the story it says Hagerstown, MD but the slide was over 100 miles west in Barton. They did list the site as Barton in the body of the story but I guess the biggest closest city is Hagerstown that people would know Nationally...LOL

This week, if it doesn't involve Virginia Teck, we ain't doin it!

What's really pitiful is that our often broken down satellite truck is broken down again - has been for a week - and they only just approved the repair order Monday...
