Getting into HF

Thank you everyone

As of right now I am still a tech - I had the opportunity to upgrade a few times and scrapped them since I didn't have the ability to "use it". There's a session next week I may join now that its in my head, at least just to have the license so if something pops up I don't have to wait to use the radio
Luckily, these online sessions make it quick and easy.

I've seen a few older rigs online lately, but Im not sure how old one should go before its too old and risk having to constantly replace things.

OK, you got a Tech license so you already can run CW on 80, 40, 15, and 10 and phone on 10.
Get a General and all the bands open up to you.
Either way, forget the portable, you have already out grown it.
(not slamming portables... IMHO just an unnecessary step in this case)
Save up and get the Alinco mentioned in post #6.
If you find you don't like transmitting on HF (unlikely) you still have a great
general coverage receiver that will out perform any typical portable.
