I just got my account set up on GT, but I was really happy using the Perseus software to connect to their receivers. I spent an hour last night listening to HF from southern Italy -- which is right across the med to Libya.

I was able to hear a lot of Russian stations - volmet, meteo, etc. I heard quite a few LSB voice stations -- on the marine frequencies -- in various languages: french, russian and spanish.

I didn't spend a lot of time on AM broadcast but it was rather funny to hear the usual US bible thumpers blasting over there as well. I felt warm all over. :)

I was trying to listen for MWARA and other air-related frequencies but didn't really catch a whole of traffic. I caught a couple MWARA hits from (I think) the UK -- as the dispatcher was speaking UK English. Didn't hear any Arabic stations or anything relating to Libya though -- like I would even know if i did. :)

I loved using the Perseus software though. It was very easy and I loved the waterfall spectrum. Really cool to see HFDL signals, RTTY and FSK signals.

Found some HAM operator transmitting FM in Italian. He did this for several minutes before switching to LSB (on 40m.)

(This was all around 6am local time.)

Quite fun.

Yeah, these global tuners (on all the different sites) are amazing. Even after 35 years in this hobby, I have learned so much in the past month. For example, I figured that I could hook up to a tuner in Greece, Sicily, or Southern Italy and pick up all sorts of cool, rare DX out of deepest Africa. How hard can it be? Well, turns out that it's still hard ... I can't hear anything out of Africa from there! It's really great having all these tuners available to listen to, but you're still only hearing the 'easy' stuff because most likely the are using 'normal' antennas like everyone else. You're not getting those 'heard around the world' receptions because you're not using big beverage antennas and the like. So, if anything, these tuners aren't spoiling me, they're revving me up to put up a better station at home! Now that I know what's out there (much more than I ever imagined), I want to hear it from here at home!

There is a new Perseus tuner on Sri Lanka (how exotic is that?!) ... here's the 60 meter band scan I just got this morning. Jam packed with stations. Now I wanna hear 'em too! LOL

Now, my pie in the sky dream is a Perseus receiver that would allow me to sneak up a VERY LONG beverage antenna in the woods here at home, but instead of camping out all night, tuning around in the dark, hoping that no one calls the cops, I can simply hook up the Perseus to record the whole band and I can tune around later at home. WHOOT! How sweet. Can't wait.

On a similar note, the Perseus network can be accessed if you install the Perseus software, and there are a few dozen Perseus receivers around the World.

I just checked the map and it looks like 57 are on at this time Perseus Servers Map - Microtelecom s.r.l.

For a while I had one of my R8500s on GlobalTuners. Usage was split pretty evenly between HF and VHF/UHF users, VHF/UHF users were mostly MilAir. There was one person or another on that thing probably 20 hours out of 24. Unfortunately I found that at least once a week someone would sign on and fall asleep, and the radio would set on a non-traffic freq for 6 or 8 hours until I disconnected them.

That radio suffered a casualty and was down for 6 months, by the time it was fixed the PC had been retasked, so it never went back on GT.

T!

Hi Token,
I'm an administrator on Globaltuners and I've found a fix for your problem.

Can you please contact me?
Just create a small support ticket here and we'll talk there.

Thanks!
