Total clown show at about 11:15 am plano PD chasing a vehicle down 635 in Dallas , Garland , Dallas, and DPS kept asking if anyone had heard from Plano about the chase , Garland could not raise Plano on the law I/O call channel , helicopter and everyone else was trying to figure out if they needed spike or assistance , but Plano offices couldn't figure out how to get the channel 😂. This is where technology and Encryption kicks your ass !

The helicopter had to spell out to Plano what the radio channel looked like on the display screen ..GMRS Law I/P Plano PD finally figured it out when the chase came to an end

Not sure encryption has anything to do with it. There are plenty of unencrypted systems/agencies/areas where they still need to change a channel (i.e., to an I/O channel), or have dispatch patch some channels to involve other agencies - and it's sometimes just as challenging.

Training has always been the issue, and always will be. What you described was 100% a training issue and easily resolved. Any after incident review should expose this.

Technology? Unlikely. The tools are there. It's a poor craftsman that blames his tools.

Encryption? Always the easy target for the scanner hobbyists.

And numerous incidents similar to this have been discussed in the past, particularly regarding DFW area agencies.

Training, practicing, rehearsing, whatever you call it, pulling things off correctly requires it. And, it's painfully obvious what's happening when you hear this stuff on the scanner.

Anyone know what their officer retention rate is? Officers getting fed up and leaving? Retirements?
It all adds up and makes training an ongoing challenge. New officers come in with different levels of experience.

As we know, radio training often consists of "push to talk, release to listen. Don't touch the big knob. Only talk to our dispatch."

Always good to know the scanner community is out there judging everything that happens and telling us, with their expert opinion, everything that was done wrong.

And yeah, police retention stinks in Texas. Far too many just slide from town to town, county to county after a dismissal. Add that to half of the state and their cousins having either their own trunking systems or old analog stuff and Voilá!

The politics ensure that will likely never happen in the DFW area. There's already been a pretty big push to try and get one of the remaining conventional only counties in NTCOG on to trunking and it's likely not going to be on 44A and definitely won't be on 1A7.

Several state agencies have a plan in place to migrate more systems to a common system. We know a common system in the state of Texas has to support at a minimum of 700/800 MHz and VHF. Until Parker county merged with NTIRN, there was only one large system out there that supported those bands in addition to being a system that not just one, but two state agencies owned core infrastructure on. Essentially, we know what the system ID of that state system is going to be.

I think the next few years are going to be really interesting as we begin to see smaller systems absorbed and fall into a larger system and new sites pop up in some fairly key locations.

Heard that live - DPS 101 was trying as hard as he could to establish comms right up until subject was in custody. His frustration was disappointing to hear...

Well, I wasnt there,and wasnt listening, but In a chase on 635 is not really the place to be trying to change channels unless its a 2 man unit.
and that is even if you know where the channel is in your radio

I dont recall ever hearing Plano PD on GMRS. They probably have lost of channels they dont even know about.

Yes it's a training issue for sure the reason I mentioned Encryption is that back before North Dallas agencies used encryption and used 453 and 460 MHz they could switch to each other's channels and pass along information. Technology has changed that and they don't share Encryption keys with neighboring agencies so they have to rely on the I/O channels which is a good thing that they have this but if officers aren't trained on how to use their radios on these channels it could be a recipe for disaster ! Encryption isolates an agency ! It's Good for officer safety , yes

And again today DPD had a person that committed a deadly conduct offense in NE Dallas around 1pm today and the suspect vehicle was tracked to a business address in , you guessed it ! Plano 😀 DPD attempted to contact Plano PD on GMRS but they never answered , Dallas PD officers arrested the suspect ( a security guard ) at the location they had brief struggle with him but got er done.
Perhaps plano should open their Interop channels on the Plano site ?

If they were trying to contact Plano on GMRS, that's the wrong system. Dallas is on NTIRN, and Plano is on PAWMCo. Perhaps they mentioned the wrong system when trying to contact Plano?

NTIRN, PAWMCo P25, & GMRS each have a designated 'law interop calling' TGID, but how many of then actually monitor that talkgroup is questionable. I have no idea if, perhaps, those individual talkgroups are patched together on a default basis.

I was wondering the same thing that's why I mentioned the plano's interop and why they aren't using it ?
