Hi folks. I'm new to scanning (bet you've heard this more times than you'd like), and I'm interested in learning what I can about antennas. I'm looking for a good antenna book, article, or website, that explains the basics of antennas sort of in laymens terms. I've done some searching on the internet, and read a few articles, but I can't say I've found something that was easy to understand and made a whole lot of sense. I also realize this is not the easiest thing to understand. I think I have a decent understanding of electronics for the most part, but I think getting to understand antennas will be a challenge.

I'm planning to get the Uniden handheld 396XT sometime when they are released in January. I like the handheld for portability when evacuating from hurricanes (did this too many times lately). I would like to put up an external antenna either in my 2nd floor attic or just outside of the roof line (have read the attic antenna threads thus far also). But back to my original reason for posting, I'm looking to learn what I can about antennas (and scanners) between now and when I make my purchase. Are there any really good books you would suggest I read to build a good understanding of antennas? I'm also open to good websites, articles, etc. I would prefer the reading to be sort of basic until I can grasp to whole concept of how they really work. I say this because some of the info I've read thus far had more math than I care to deal with while learning this.

Thanks in advance,

Thanks for your replies. The ARRL Antenna Book looks like a good place for me to start. The reviews I read were very good.

Thanks again,

I have some good literature on everything you need to know about antennas and how they work. I have it on a .PDF file. Its call "Antenna Fact Book" (unknown author ARRL?). It's 36pages full of information on everything you need to know about Antennas. I am having trouble uploading this file to RR.

If anyone is interested I'll be more than happy to email you this literature. Just send me a PM.

Hey I'd be interested in it.

As far as the stuff I primarily use,
- Antennas (For All Applications) by Kraus
- ARRL Antenna Book
- Antenna Theory - Analysis and Design by Balanis

and then I have an assortment of downloaded PDFs on antennas (probably 50 documents or so).

Don't forget to check Ebay for older antenna handbooks. For the basics, $10 will get you the same info from 1980 that you'll get in the newest version. Sometimes I like the older versions better - they are just simpler (i.e. no computer stuff). K.I.S.S. !!
