Utility Using Private Wireless System to Enhance Asset Management and Control Costs

LONG BEACH, Ca., – 24 May 2005 – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE), a subsidiary of Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG), has signed a contract to utilize Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) voice and data technology to enhance customer service, improve reliability, manage utility assets more efficiently, and reduce operating costs by eliminating leased air time charges.

The multi-million dollar contract, which was awarded to Motorola during the first quarter of 2005, was announced today during the United Telecom Council’s “Telecom 2005” Expo in Long Beach, CA.

BGE, which delivers natural gas to approximately 620,000 customers and provides electricity to roughly 1.2 million customers in Central Maryland, will use Motorola’s Harmony™ Wireless Communication System throughout the company’s 2,300 square mile service territory. BGE will use the integrated communication system for a variety of business critical functions, including improved outage response and restoration, additional remote monitoring and control, enhanced system reliability, and improved customer service.

“BGE was seeking a system that would deliver multiple capabilities, scalability and control, while ensuring the highest level of security and cost efficiency,” said Gregory C. Martin, vice president of BGE’s General Services Division. “In addition to satisfying these requirements, the Harmony solution will allow us to work smarter, achieve higher performance ratings and return on investment as we grow customers and expand services.”

Motorola’s Harmony System is a user-owned wireless voice communications network designed to provide mobile work groups with fast, flexible communication services over 800 and 900 MHz frequencies. The Harmony System provides two-way radio and packet data services while enabling up to six simultaneous transmissions on a single 25 kHz channel using Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) digital technology. Motorola’s digital private wireless systems range from large, statewide networks to small, single-site private systems.

The Motorola Harmony system will replace BGE’s existing analog radio communications infrastructure, a 10-site simulcast system. According to Martin, the Harmony system eliminates the reliance on public wireless networks for BGE’s critical communications.

“We are extremely pleased that a company often recognized as being at the forefront of the utility industry selected Motorola to implement a business-critical communications system,” said Chris Banakis, Motorola Vice President and Director of Enterprise Utilities Solutions. “Commercial and residential utility providers such as BGE are turning to the Harmony system because it addresses today’s most relevant business issues for the utility industry – safety, reliability and customer satisfaction.”

No doubt this is going to take some time to implement; and how this will play out with the rebanding is an open issue. I suspect you'll hear them for some time to come.

My Source at BGE says it will be a while before BGE get fully switched over to this new system and they will however keep the old system around for a while afterwords.
