The PSR-800 was already P25 Phase 2 capable through a firmware update. If you still have the old firmware, the legacy upgrade will update the scanner to P25 Phase 2.

When I called Whistler, about update, woman said it would put in DMR ,I asked her if it update to phase 2 ,she said No,,I was going to say if update made it a Whistle 1080 which has phase 2,,then it should make psr 800 phase 2,,,but I didnt get the chance

Sounds like the woman at Whistler needs to be retrained. The upgrade definitely will give you P25 Phase 2 even if you still have the Pre-Phase 2 firmware. Your scanner becomes a Whistler WS1080 which is Phase 2 capable. It also adds DMR. It also adds P25 Phase 2 and DMR to the Radio Shack PRO-18 which was P25 Phase 1 only.

Does the firmware patch make it possible to enter new frequencies without having to hook the thing up to a computer?

It is possible to program using the keypad.

(From WS1080 manual)
1. Press MENU to access Main Menu.
2. Scroll to and select “Program Menu” then “Add Conv Freq”.
3. Simply write over the existing frequency or press “SKIP” to clear. Using the arrow buttons, enter the desired conventional frequency. Press SEL when finished.
4. Scroll to “Save Changes” then press SEL.
5. Press MENU returns to Main menu.

It is far faster and easier using programming software. You will still need a computer and the WS1080/WS1088 EZ-Scan software to update firmware and the library.

Yes, if you want to torture yourself. IMO: a PC is the easiest way and will eliminate keypad errors PLUS a pc ( with internet access) allows you to update the Library weekly. You don't need the latest greatest pc to program.
