The answer is.

It depends.

If you are rural and don't have a huge RF noise floor in your area.. probably would help.

If you are in any type of urban area with paging transmitters, etc., then no. It's counter productive and will probably overload your receiver and make the problem worse.

It is NOT a low-noise amplifier.

How "not low noise" are they?

Would it surprise you in the least if I told you that there doesn't seem to be publicized noise figure or third order intercept specifications for this thing?

I didn't think so. =)

It does not "surprise me", but unpublished does not mean "bad".

GRE Super AMP

They NO longer make the GRE 3100 Super AMP for base scanners. They make a amp that goes on handheld scanners. I have 6 of the 3100 base Amps, and the last 2 I bought on EBAY...I think the handheld models would work on a base scanner, all you need is a power supply.

I had one on a Pro-2096 and it did not do well at all. In fact it kills most signals on VHF and UHF unless they were close and very strong. The ones I needed it for, it would not get. I am out in the country about 30 miles south of Dallas so I don't think I have an overload problem. If anybody can tell me how I might improve it, I would be glad to try.

From what I've heard about it, throwing it away would be a good start.

Start with the antenna system, cable and connectors first.

Then if you really need an amp, try something like this:

GRS Super Amplfier

I have a GRS Super Amp. and am using it almost exclusively with my BC780 XLT. Been using it for 3 yrs. I live in the middle of a Motorola Smartzone system ( 60 cells in all) in SC. With it turned on I can copy 7 different TRS cells clearly. Wtih it off the reception on distant cells are scratchy. Have power supply with it. Works good for me. I live 10-25 miles from most of the cells. I use a 800Mhz Maxrad antenna on the BC 780 XLT.

ps: Also works well on my Pro 93; Pro 95; and Pro 96.

Gre Super Amps

I think some of the problems people have is that tha power supply they buy to power the AMP is not strong enough.I tried a 300 mA power supply when I bought my first Super AMP 9 years ago and it caused the AMP not to work correctly.I took the power supply back to Radio Shack and exchanged it for a 800mA unit and it worked fine.

It works fine as long as you don't expect miracles.

I use mine as a mil satcom preamp with my small satcom antenna. It works well for that and brings many of the signals up out of the noise. It also works very well for the military aircraft band.

I don't suggest connecting it to a scanner and just leave it there. It's more of a tool that it helpful in certain situations. Everyone's setup is different.

I don't think it's something so horrible that it should be thrown out in the garbage, that's for sure! Afterall, if all scanning problems could be eliminated with a preamp the manufacturers would build one in at the factory.
