So, what happened to the GSP 17 channel trunked system that went on-line fairly recently? Did they abandon or is it just a few million bucks just gathering dust? I aslo noticed in other areas in Georgia (like Savannah) GSP is using the local trunk and not state stuff. Is state scrapping plans for a statewide build out and will piggy back on locals?
Thanks..

There never was a GSP 17 channel trunked system.

There is a LICENSE for a 17 channel multi-site simulcast trunked system, and has been for many years. But the license, as is so often the case, has nothing to do with the real system.

The State has a single-site system with a few frequencies, with the only site located downtown. It is used by Georgia State University and a few other agencies with a downtown focus. GSP tried to make used of this short-range system, but needless to say, it does not reach the suburbs that Troop C covers. Thus, Troop C switched to the City of Atlanta TRS, which has six simulcast towers around the city and provides better coverage.

Rest assured that thus far the only "few million bucks gathering dust" is the money spent on plans and FCC licenses for systems that as of yet have never been purchased or built out.

The Troop C VHF repeater is still used if the trooper is out of range. So really, anytime GSP is operating in Gwinnett, north Cobb, or north and east Dekalb they will still be on the VHF repeater. It should also be noted that GSP almost never operates in Gwinnett.
