A man shot himself in the parking lot outside the North Colorado Medical Center parking lot shortly after noon today, according to Greeley police.
The unidentified man, who was rushed into the hospital for treatment, stepped from a vehicle and shot himself in the right shoulder, said Joe Tymkowych, Greeley police spokesman.
It was the only shot fired, he said, and no one else was hurt.
Police were notified at 11:53 a.m. that a man was making suicidal threats via a cell phone from a vehicle in the hospital parking lot. The first officer arrived on scene at 11:56 a.m. followed by several other officers.
The man stepped from the red sedan at 12:04 and shot himself, Tymkowych said.
“They only had three or four minutes from the time it was dispatched to the time the guy got out and shot himself,” he said.
No other weapons were found.
“It appears it was his intent to pull up there and shoot himself for whatever reason,” Tymkowych said.
He said he’s not sure whether the person the man was talking to on the phone made the initial report to police. Hospital personnel, who could see the man in the car from the ER windows, were advised not to approach the man, Tymkowych said.
The parking lot was partially cordoned off after the shooting. Officers are investigating.
