I am hearing traffic on "Air 1" They are down at lake mountain. They mentioned "Another national guard helicopter is in the area still" They have sent 2 Med helicopters, one with night vision. I don't have the other TG's for that area in so don't have all the info yet. Also try the Guard air channel.

So I was in South Jordan and a chopper flew north toward airport #2. About 15 minutes later (just about 20:00) they were flying south toward Utah Lake. I wonder if it was that chopper that went down or if they were already working the incident at that point...

When I got home, I did pickup a lot of traffic on Air 1 (TG: 17184) as well as the UT County SAR (TG: 46336) and the AirMed Dispatch (TG: 17248).

At one point they decided to change over to what they called "Ops 1" and could no longer hear any traffic (this was close to 22:00). Does anybody know where there "Ops 1" is? It might just not be repeated on the Salt Lake County site and that is why I couldn't hear it, or it my be some type of Talk around...

I think the Heli that you saw was "Star 7" they were en route to the scene and turned back to Airport II to pick up some personnel.

They most likely switched to the Utah County Ops 1. I am not sure it is affliated with the Salt Lake site.

Utah County Ops 1= TGID 42976

Just listened to a conversation about setting up a No Fly Zone around the crash site because it is interfering with the military’s investigation efforts

This would fit the profile of what I observed and is probably an accurate assessment.

For future reference, does anybody happen to have the frequencies used by these choppers for training as well as air-to-ground and air-to-tower? I seem them skirt across the sky every now and then and would like to listen in...

From what I could hear they had been turned down.

Following military radio communications might not be that easy now days. The radios they were switching to when I was getting out, SINCGARS, hopped frequencies like a trunked systems but they were mostly encrypted too. The civilian air control stuff would be in the clear but that is about it.

I also think some of the avionics come from a company whohas offices over by the airport. Their initails are L 3

I hear Life Flight occasionally on 120.9000 clearing with the airport tower when they have a flight for liftoff clearance and altitude assignments, and I think that Air Med uses 123.0500 for tower clearances. 123.0250 is used as a c2c frequency for all the private, news and medical helicopters that fly in the SL area. The Civil Air Patrol (CAP), when it is being used on a search, is assigned 123.1000. If you are not familiar with their jargon, all the air traffic frequencies are extremely hard to understand because their radio traffic is fast and succinct.

121.5000 is supposed to be a dedicated air emergency frequency. I, thankfully, have never heard any traffic on it.

There are other civilian flight frequencies here.

As Rolfman said, info on military frequencies is hard to come by these days. At one time, all of Hill's frequencies were posted in the RR Database, but the Database Admins heeded a request to delete that info after 9/11. Unless the frequencies have been changed, older dated books that published radio frequencies would still have these listed. I am sure the critical frequencies are probably scrambled.

I don't have any of the ANG freqs (I haven't been searching for them), but I have found a few of the freqs used by the training range for Hill AFB.
283.7500, 3030.0000, 316.1500, 322.0000. One band to search is 138~144 AM for the ANG.

As for encryption, I was in Washington DC, before, during, and after 9-11, and there was and still is very little encryption of MilAir comms. Almost all the comms fighter to fighter, and AWACs is in the clear. The conversations were, at times interesting. Mostly tho, boring stuff.

You can go to the DC forum and see what is being talked about. I do miss the fed/mil stuff from that area. Always something new to find.
