Moving into Gwinnett county and am aware everything is encripted.
Question is what do the fire depts. do about paging. Are they using
high band or some other system.

Thanks all......

All paging is done via the system. I've lived in Gwinnett for 17 years, and miss listening to the FD. Back in 2008 they went silent for both LE and FD. Decided to go in the clear to interop with the surrounding counties. Last year, some nut bag in the county decided to encrypt FD again.
Depending on where you live in the county gives you options of listening to Forsyth county, Hall county FD, DeKalb county, Fulton county and North Fulton (for which you will need a scanner that has Phase II).
PM me for more scanning fun.

Paging

Ok thanks for the reply. I was wondering what the volunteers or off duty
folks carried for alerting.
I know the HT's are very expensive.

No volunteers in Gwinnett County FD. No personal pagers or portables. Cherokee County still has volunteers in the FD.

Wow.....So there own people have no way of knowing whats going on
or being subject to any kind of recall if needed.
Sounds to me like the system is being run by the police.
I retired after 36 years in the fire service. Nine years as a volunteer and 27
on a career department.
All very interesting. I still listen to my home department up in Pa.everyday.

The stations are manned 24/7 in the county. So, no recall. But, they can't listen to the call outs at home anymore.
One incident, about 10 years ago, set the trend to go dark. Media was all over a home invasion/stand-off by someone who escaped from the Fulton county courts and went on a killing spree. I monitored the GCPD on their VHF frequencies that the media didn't have programmed into their scanners. This took place less than 3 miles from the home QTH.
GCFD does have other departments programmed into their radios for interop. So do the PD.
I remember visiting my wife's relatives in the Johnstown area of PA, and using my ham radios along analog scanners to monitor the VFD's in the area. One of her cousins is a EMT/FF.
I truly miss hearing the FD here in the county.
