Wirelessly posted (Tmobile G1: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 1.6; en-us; T-Mobile G1 Build/DRC83) AppleWebKit/528.5+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.2 Mobile Safari/525.20.1)

Althought RR is by far my favorite radio related site... its very well format, full of great smart people and good info... the wiki, on line radios, mobile site...

But its not geared twards hams... what are some good ham forums?

Er, if you Google "ham radio forums" you'll turn up a boatload. Like any forum it is what you make it and what you make of it. That having been said there are friendly ones while some are caustic and then there are a few cesspools, they run the gamut from A to QRZ (ugh) and unless you have waders and a gas mask you can avoid Hamsexy.

I invite you to check out our cozy little Island Of Misfit Hams in the sun, don't be put off at some of the comments we toss at each other all in good fun. We're a crazy bunch with a serious side and we welcome newbies (believe it or not, hi hi). The Island of Misfit Hams • Index page

Ohhhhhh Boy . . .

Being a *ham* myself, I can say most of the websites that are ham-related can be quite caustic as someone already put it. I also visit those sites from time to time but have myself been verbally run into the ground on a few occassions while there. One might think you could run into a *better* group of people by frequenting ham radio websites, and, dare I say, this is usually not the case. In short, you will find the same potential of being verbally assaulted on a ham radio website as you will anywhere else on the Internet - probably more. Being a ham seems to intensify this effect in some people though.

Now I'm not saying this applies to ALL ham radio operators (or ham sites), but you'll notice I'm here instead of there. Those sites have their purpose and can be as useful as any site dedicated to a particular hobby. However, I have found that newbies asking questions aren't always met with kindness and understanding.

I can't thank the users of this site enough for their assistance thusfar, which has been minimal at this point. But the help I've received has been kind, courteous, and funny at times, and doesn't make the person asking the questions feel like they're at the bottom of the food chain and equally as stupid.

Speaking from experience . . . :)

Oh you poor thing... <sigh>
Zed Heads hate everyone who have been licensed only since the Korean War or are not cw operators at at least 40 wpm. No code hams are chastised, denegrated, and crapped on.. Hell, they even hate each other. They are a closed circle of unwelcoming curmudgeons. I do hope that you are not easily discouraged or take them too seriously. I think that you would be happier elsewhere. Frankly, you are better off staying on RR.com where you are among friends.

QRZ can be a good source of information as there are some knowledgeable people on the forums. There is a whole bunch of whiners, and trolls on there also. It's kind of like a person you can only stand for about 15 minutes before you want run the other way.

I don't think I've yet run into a ham forum that wasn't overflowing with bad attitude and testosterone poisoning. There's just something about the internet that seems to bring out the worst in people. But still, there IS some useful information to be had at times, so sign up, dive right in. If you get assaulted, remember that it's just words, and just dots on a phosphor screen (or whatever technology your flat screen happens to use, for you pedantic simpletons out there). The point being, words and dots can't really hurt you.

I'm just glad that on-the-air interactions are 1000 times more pleasant that the internet is.

One piece of advice:

Don't ever, ever, ever, ever ask on a ham forum how to mod your radio for out of band operation.
The self-appointed radio police are just waiting to pounce...

The Island is the best, QRZ is full of whiners and complainers, eham is a little better than the Zed, but not by much. There are a few others but they have very little going on. If you go to the Zed beware of the zombies and nuts, they can go overboard, be sure to wear your pith helmet.

"However, I have found that newbies asking questions aren't always met with kindness and understanding."
Being a Fourlander is bad enough and being in Floor-ee-duh doesn't help any. (;->)

"I can't thank the users of this site enough for their assistance thusfar, which has been minimal at this point."
Maybe because Amateur Radio isn't the main thrust of our mission?

"But the help I've received has been kind, courteous, and funny at times..."
Oh you must be talking about me, the clown in this circus.

"...and doesn't make the person asking the questions feel like they're at the bottom of the food chain and equally as stupid."
Simply amazing coming from a FOURlander. (;->)

"And don't ever ask how to make a dipole!!"
468/f in MHz...
Now that's thinkin' wi' yer Hamstick, Jimmy!
