Im looking into purchasing a handheld of my own for use at work. I would like to find one that is vhf, powerful (im usually talking fairly long distance with no repeaters), has a digitial display, 10 or so channels, and ballpark price rang of 200 bucks or less.

What brand/model do you guys suggest?

-thanks

I use the Motorola Radius CP200 16 ch. VHF at work. I have a Kenwood tk-270 32 ch. for home use. I'm getting a brand new MOTOTRBO XPR 6500 160 ch. for work in a couple of weeks. I still wish I had my HT90. I had that thing for over 20 years, never failed.

Do they do CTCSS & DCS (DPL)? I've been looking for field-programmable w/ DCS and that may be the brand I'll start searching for.

What in the world were you thinking when you bought a radio without having a way to program it? Wait until you find out how much that's going to cost you. Wait until you want to change, add, or delete a frequency. Lesson learned I guess...

Yeah thats whats good about the knockoff radios. Field Programmability. Good thing is radios maintain their value fairly well so resale shouldnt be an issue IF you decide to do so. Get an FCC type accepted radio thats field programmable. If its a MARS/CAP radio (opened up ham) use it and stay quiet about it. If by chance you get an FCC audit of your equipment, forget your radio that day. Sorry Hammers but I think public service radios are WAY overpriced when I can get a CAP radio for a 1/2 the price that has more features and is field programmable. One radio in the right hands isnt hurting anything but the major radios manufacturers bloated pockets, but thats another rants I'll save for the tavern.
