Hiya All- I'm new to the world of amateur radio. I recently purchased a cheap little SDR and have started scanning the airwaves. I tried listening in on some of the DMR systems listed here at radio reference without success. When I started troubleshooting, unfortunately all I uncovered was more confusion! I guess my first question is this- is there someone in the county that is knowledgeable about what kind of system they are using out here? RR suggests it's a Hytera XPT system managed by Dean's two way. A little digging revealed that the county used to partner with Diverse and their Tetra setup? After more digging it seems the county approved an upgrade to a p25 system last year but I have no idea where that's at. Specifically, I'm in the Cataula area and have been tinkering with the frequencies listed at RR for this site.

Anyway- before I can figure out why I'm not hearing anything, I need to verify what I'm trying to scan! If there are some old pros here who have a little history/knowledge on the county system and wouldn't mind sharing with a new guy it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Come to the Columbus Amateur Radio Club meeting next week on Thursday June 11th and I will tell you all about it. I will be there about 5:30PM and the meeting starts at 6PM sharp. That will give us a half hour to discuss before the meeting starts. The meeting is held at the Columbus Main Library on Macon Road in the first floor auditorium.

Hiya and thanks for the reply. Funny enough, I recognized your username because what information I have managed to glean together came in part from some older forums posts from you. Sounds like the county has quite an interesting communications history.

Unfortunately I can't make the meeting but I'm glad to know that Columbus has an amateur radio club and hopefully can attend one in the future.

Mark your calendar, the CARC is coming to you! We are going to be camping overnight and operating portable from the Muscogee Long Rifles range on Holland Road June 27 and 28 for the annual ARRL National Field Day. That weekend would be a great opportunity to talk scanners and radio in general. Ask where the VHF station is and then find me there.
