Helicopter evacuating Tuscarawas - STAT MedEvac to discontinue service in county.

STAT MedEvac, which flies critically ill and injured patients to major medical centers, will halt its Tuscarawas County operations Saturday at midnight.
“I’m disappointed,” said Bob Smith, owner and president of Smith Ambulance Services.
“Apparently STAT Med-Evac’s board of directors voted to shut down its New Philadelphia operation last Friday.”
Smith said he was told the operation did not meet financial expectations.
Smith said 12 to 15 helicopter flight crew members, who “drove to New Philadelphia from all over,” worked for Pittsburgh-based STAT MedEvac.
He believed there were more complicated issues that factored into STAT’s move. A call to STAT’s headquarters was not returned Thursday.
The landing pad and base of operations at Harry Clever Field is owned by Smith Ambulance.
“I have a 10-year lease agreement with the city of New Philadelphia,” Smith said. “This is exactly why we did not want to share ownership of the base with an out-of-county provider. It’s also why we have the opportunity to continue to seek another medical helicopter provider.”
Two Ohio-based companies are interested in replacing STAT as the county’s air medical transport provider, and the outcome “looks promising,” Smith said.
“We should know within a week or two,” he added.
“I think the main thing is that having a helicopter service is a tremendous asset to a community our size, especially being rural and at a distance from trauma centers. Our local EMTs and paramedics are highly trained and do a good job. The level of care is here but having an aircraft stationed nearby increases the speed that is needed to get to a trauma center when the need arises.”
Smith said STAT transported 470 patients in Tuscarawas County over the course of the last year.
According to the contract terms, Smith said he should have had 90 days’ notice from STAT before operations ceased.

Who are the two 'Ohio based' agencies? Metro? MedFlight? I know someone that used to work for MedFlight that was trying to get things laid out for MedFlight to base in that general area. But, the plans fell through. :(

MedFlight of Ohio will provide a medical helicopter at New Philadelphia

Medical helicopter service touches down - Pact fills void from Pittsburgh company's departure

MedFlight of Ohio will provide a medical helicopter at New Philadelphia beginning today under an agreement reached with Smith Ambulance, Smith owner and President Robert L. Smith said.

MedFlight already has a base at Coshocton and will rotate placing a helicopter and crew at Coshocton and Harry Clever Field at New Philadelphia until a crew of emergency medical personnel can be hired and trained for the specialized duties, Smith explained. That could take up to two months for an evaluation of the area’s needs, he said, adding that the previous crew was employed by the previous helicopter provider.

A partnership agreement between STAT MedEvac of Pittsburgh and Smith Ambulance was terminated Dec. 23 by Stat MedEvac. Smith immediately started talks with several other air medical providers.

Smith and Rod Crane, MedFlight president and chief executive officer, have a handshake agreement that MedFlight 4 will begin to rotate the aircraft and crew every other day between New Philadelphia and Coshocton until a permanent crew is assigned to New Philadelphia.

“We’ve had a commitment to serve Coshocton and Tuscarawas counties for over a decade, and when Bob Smith called me and asked for some help to take care of the critical care needs in the region, we were very pleased to step forward and do so,” Crane said. “We will now share MedFlight 4 while we evaluate the viability of placing a full-time helicopter in New Philadelphia.”

“We are extremely pleased to be working with MedFlight to provide needed, life-saving air medical transportation to the community,” Smith said. “Having the resources of the helicopter and highly trained flight crew located in the area assures a rapid transport of critically injured and ill patients to trauma centers and specialty facilities.”

MedFlight has been in operation since 1995. LifeFlight of Grant Medical Center at Columbus initially set up service at Coshocton around 1992, Crane said.

The Coshocton base serves a 30- to 40-mile radius from the airport at Coshocton. To make sure Coshocton has full service during the rotating schedule, MedFlight has made adjustments for its helicopters at Lodi and Columbus to respond if need be, he said.
Crews consist of a helicopter pilot, nurse and paramedic. He said the nurses and medics are trained in critical care and must have at least five years of experience before joining the company.

MedFlight has seven helicopters at Columbus, Allen Center (near Marysville), Wellston (south of Athens), Coshocton, Lodi, McConnelsville (in Morgan County) and Portsmouth. The business also has two airplanes for national and international flights and a fleet of mobile intensive care trucks at Cleveland, Wooster, Marion and Columbus.

MedFlight has about 230 employees. The company also owns and operates Coshocton County Emergency Medical Services, with three bases in the county with a total of about 80 employees.

Mike Mossor, director of operations at Smith Ambulance, will be working closely with MedFlight personnel and the county’s 911 emergency communications center “to establish a quality communications system with all local emergency agencies.”

Smith Ambulance Service has served the area since 1983 and operates stations at Dover, New Philadelphia and Uhrichsville. Smith also owns Smith Ambulance of North East Ohio, with stations at Wooster and Millersburg.
