Hi,

I recently was given a Pro164 scanner and I am trying to educate myself by reading the forum, etc. I went to the local RS, but they really don't seem to know very much, even the basics. I asked about a power supply, and they said to bring the unit in. It's their unit and I would think they would be able to tell me what I need?? When I asked about it, they asked voltage and amps and I responded 9v 400 mA. Then the clerk fumbled around and never did seem to find one. I asked them if this scanner would allow me to listen to Akron Police, and they just shrugged. I was kind and thanked him for his time and didn't say what I was really thinking :)

I purchased the USB cable from Radio Shack, downloaded the demo of ARC300, and joined radioref. as a premium member so I can download files. The unit talks between the computer and the unit, and I can download and then inport files to the scanner. However, it doesn't seem to be allowing me to hear most of the channels.

I'm just trying to set this up, and right now it's trail and error without a clue of what most of this means. I just can't seem to find anyone to call or ask in this area. So, I'm wondering if someone in Summit County would be willing to do a little hand-holding to get me up and understanding beyond the basics, and then a few other questions I have. For reference, I have a RS Pro 2040 and it allows me to listen to air and railroads. I also have a tower antenna. I'm sure this is all "been there done that" with you experienced users.

PS: I started a thread in the RS area of the forum, but didn't get any responses, so I thought I would be more specific by asking for some help in this forum more specific to my area.

Thanks so much in advance for your time,

Cody

The Pro-164 is an analog scanner. Akron City is on the Summit County 800 System which is digital. You won't be able to receive digital systems with that scanner. There are still places like Hudson, Twinsburg, Macedonia, Sagamore Hills and others on 423 MHz conventional analog systems.

Thanks Ed for your info. It explained Akron being digital. Sidebar question, did you used to work for Radio Shack?

Until you decide if you want to buy a digital scanner you can listen to Akron Police on broadcastify.com on your computer. If you have an I phone or android phone you can download a scanner app. All of this is free.

Fortunately, GA
Cody, the 164 will hear all the Analog TGID's, but won't decode the
Digital ones. You will need a Pro-106 to listen to Cuyahoga Falls and the rest of the digital cities in the Summit county system.

Thanks for the info and yes, I'm looking at a used 106. In this area with the 164, what can I hear that my older scanner (pro 2040) can't. In other words, with digital in this area with Police and 2 major cities, I'm not clear on what purpose the trunking now serves. Maybe you can share what you listen to using trunking in this area on the 164 or similar type.

No I did not. In fact I can't remember when I last was even in a Radio Shack store. :)
