To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey everyone, I'm new here so take it easy on me. I'm running into an issue when trying to use clone express in APX CPS on our 8000's. I can write to the radio with no problem, but when I try to put the codeplug onto any other other portable, including the one I started with using clone express, I get this error message "PERMISSION DENIED SYSTEM KEYS FOR ALL THE TRUNKING SYSTEMS IN THE CODEPLUG MUST BE LOADED TO PERFORM THIS OPERATION"

Can anyone tell me what step I may be missing? I have loaded the system keys, reloaded them, scrapped the codeplug and read it fresh, resaving it and trying with the new one....

I don't have this issue with our 6000's or our XTS 2500's (not that it's even the same software for those).

This problem is making it really tedious when I'm changing a couple zones, adding some conventional channels, and changing several settings.

Thanks in advance.

APX is a bit different animal. When you go to clone, the personality has to have all the keys for all the systems loaded.
I think for security, if you save a codeplug, keys are not saved. You can try re entering all the needed keys into the saved codeplug, then write to the radios.
I don't know with certainty; I haven't got to the point of cloning APX.

That's not how trunked system keys work. They are never stored in the codeplug or the radio, only loaded into CPS either via a software key or a hardware advanced system key (ASK). If the radios being programmed have QA01648 in the FLASH, then a hardware ASK is mandatory, the software key will not work.

@mmarlin163 do the radios being cloned have a trunked system that is not in the codeplug you are trying to clone? In other words, are you trying to remove a system while updating the radios? Do the radios have QA01648 ASK in the FLASH, and if yes, are you trying to clone with software keys loaded into CPS?

Thanks for the quick reply.

All these radios were programmed identically prior to me changing these zones and settings in the radio that I started with, with the exception of their system ID's and such.

I haven't added or removed any trunked systems to the radio, but I DID create a new zone and add a few channels that were not already in a zone. Those channels were already in the radio though, and I've tried deleting that zone entirely with no change in my outcome.

Yes, QA01648 is enabled in the flash and the keys are loaded into CPS and remain plugged into my USB port while trying to clone.

The baffling part to me is that I can still write to the radio, just not clone.

Maybe this is why the smart guy at the radio shop told me clone express could be sketchy.

I'll have to agree with him. Does normal cloning work if you use the Read Radio IDs function? If yes, then you're probably discovered a bug with Clone Express, rather than being something you've overlooked. By the way, which version of CPS, 27.00.01?

Yes, R 27.00.01 is what I'm using. Oh by the way, I FOUND THE PROBLEM!!!!!!

The retailer/programmer we buy our stuff from does most of our local refineries as well. The trunking system for one of them was loaded into the codeplug, and of course I don't have the system keys for them. That was causing cloning to get jammed up, but somehow I was still able to write back to the same radio I read the codeplug from.

Delete the refinery system and she's cloning smooth like butter.

I never even thought to look in that tab.

Thanks for your help!

Because the system was already in that codeplug/radio, so it wasn't hassling you for the system key. If that system wasn't in the radios being cloned, it wants the key to get it in them initially to make sure that you're authorized. Glad you found the issue, I figured it was something along those lines.

Next time use "Clone Radio" (The Clone Wizard) instead of Clone Express.
A window then opens up which allows you to see both Trunked & Conv systems being cloned.
That way you save yourself grief in the future.
