Broadcasts get so broken up from my Radio Shack Pro106 scanner that most often I can't make out what people are saying. I reprogrammed it several times, rebooted to default setting and played with the squelch many times. I bought this scanner a few years ago and have never been happy with its performance. I'm curious if anyone else has this problem or know what the issue might be.

What antenna(s) are you using and what system(s) are you listening to?
You'll probably get better answers about listening to a particular system in your state's forum.

Check for loose connection at the antenna, put the antenna between your thumb & first finger & wiggle the antenna BUT not hard, then push antenna to one side & hold it there & see if that helps, you may have a loose connection.

If you are listening to a simulcast system its pretty tough going unless you are really close to one of the towers...

I'm programmed to a simulcast system and I'm guessing the tower isn't too far from where I live (5 miles from the Cty sheriff headquarters). I'm also using the optional high gain antenna and checked for loose connection. Still no luck - I hate to put the scanner on the shelf again and it would be nice if it worked.

You are getting signals from 2 or more towers at the same time... The trick is cutting down the signal from the towers further away....

have you...

taken it outside. in case the house attenuates the signals?
tries other broadcasts like noaa to see if it sounds the same?
you might be able to go somewhere else and check reception, go to a mall?
it could be the antenna connection at the end of the antenna or a broken connection inside the radio.
try a good know antenna to start checking. one of my mobile antennas worked great on two handhelds and poorly on another and when i looked the pin is a little shorter than any of the others.
time for a walk
good luck

NDradionut is on the money. First, go back to the original antenna. Next, activate the attenuator for that system. The attenuator should cut incoming signals by 20db. Since you're 5 miles from the nearest tower, that should hopefully help at least some.

Another option is to purchase a directional antenna, point it toward your nearest tower. That should eliminate the the simulcasted signals from the other sites.

The problem is that scanners in general have difficulty with simulcasted digital signals. When 2 or more signals arrive at your scanner milliseconds apart, that's just enough simulcast distortion for the scanner to not properly decode the digital signal. Receiving an analog simulcasted system does not have that problem.

You guys and/or gals are geniuses!!! I tried several of your suggestions; reinstalled stock antenna, activated the attenuator mode, reprogrammed the device, etc.... and it actually works! Thank you, Thank you and Merry Christmas a what a nice gift :))).
