if money's no object and you need digital and a hand held go with the uniden bcd396t.
it will run you around $519.00.remember though, while it is digital capable no scanner will decode encrypted radio traffic.this is my personal opinion.opinion's may vary.other disclaimer information inserted here ----- . LOL

Are all of the digital's around $500?

That's where the pricing begins unless RatShack is having one of their sales for the PRO-96. If you see a digital for less, it is used, potentially dropped, usually reconditioned, or stolen.

not knocking radio shacks stuff because i really love some of their scanners.when it come's to the rs pro-96 vs. the bcd396t i definetly think the 396 gives the 96 more than a run for the money.i'd pay the x-tra buck's and get the 396.see the previous rs-96 vs.the 396 threads here on rr.

If you don't require a new radio keep an eye on the for sale section here or e-bay. I got my 396T for $335.00. Though I only got the radio with antenna, charger and belt clip. All other accessories not included. Worked for me and the scanner is in great shape.
