According to the chap at nevada the back of the alinco the af jack on the back is meant for recording ?

Hmmmm, I am the only one who mentioned the AF jack on the DXR8T, so I assume you meant me. I am not in Nevada, but rather California.

The AF (Audio Frequency) jack on the back of the DXR8T is a fixed level (not affected by front panel volume control) detector output, at about 50 mV pp. This is often rather ideal for recording.

this forum is the best scanner forum I've ever been on
Well In the manual the back diagram is number 3 and it says RCA connector and the chap at nevada radio said it is a phono connector so would a phone to 3.5 mm lead do ?

Other end 3.5 mm

As I asked before, what specifically? 3.5 mono or 3.5 stereo? They are different.

Look on this page:
3.5mm RCA Adapters - Monoprice.com

If you need 3.5 mono you could select part number 7146.

If you need 3.5 stereo you could select part number 7147.

A simple RCA to RCA cable would then come from the back of the Alinco to this adapter.

Token I've bought a phone to phono lead and put a 3. 5 mm adaptor on one end to the dictaphone
But it still won't work with the alinco DX r8e
Do you know of any lead that will work with it ?

Why would you use the dictaphone when there are many very good recording programs out there (some free) that take their input from the soundcard?

All you would need would be a lead from the R8E Phone jack to your soundcard. You may need to play with the soundcard settings in Windows, since the phone jack could be a bit too hot. But it's far and away better than using some old 80s technology...

Aha.

Of course it does, the 8600 is a VHF radio with squelch - when there is no signal the radio goes quiet and the dictaphone switches off.
The Alinco DX8RE is an HF radio - not many HF radios have squelch as it just doesn't work well, the background noise comes up with no signal and keeps your dictaphone running. Your option would be to reduce the RF gain when no signal until the dictaphone stops and hope that it starts again when the signal returns.
There's probably nothing wrong with your recording lead.
I see that the DX8 doesn't have an RF gain control - you may have to try different settings of the RF Attenuator.

I doubt it - this is because HF, as a rule, is a noisy band. Any increase in the noise level - either due to some weather event or someone turning on an appliance - is going to trip whatever you want to use to record. It's the nature of the beast.

This is a very similar argument against the use of 'scanning' like you can on bands higher than 30 Mhz. It's really not practical Mike

It doesn't matter which radio you have - HF radio just does not work as the squelch does not recognise the difference between noise and voice - unless you can find a piece of software to do the job or a DSP receiver that has voice recognition. Not in any receiver that I've seen under a couple of grand anyway.
