Idk if this was mentioned before but supposedly both Holyoke PD and FD utilize Kenwood nx 5000 series radios so one unit can do both dmr and p25 from the same radio. Imo DMR is worth it for the money and every department would probably go to it if it was funded by the gov and such lol
There is no such thing as government funded, it's all taxpayer funded.

And we are funding it with grants (less nowadays) because when something bad happens everyone needs to talk to everyone... which NEVER happens even if they could! OK, off my soapbox..

Well, that's not going to happen. Interop of not, digital communications are what's going to happen. P25 is the APCO standard, so that means the bulk of government digital is going to be P25.

I say let's get rid of severely inflated P25 all together. Originally, it was all about "interop", since this has gone by the wayside, why should my tax dollars continue to fund it while other technologies work just as well if not better for a third of the cost? I say different technologies, but we are getting the the point of sharing the same vocoders as P25 with other digital flavors so why is it so much cheaper? Hmm..

And do you feel that P25 is a complete rip off to the taxpayer? That was my point. Everything the government gets involved with cost 5 times what it’s worth

If you want to engage in a political debate, there is probably something in the expansive off topic section of the forum. Personally, I come here to discuss scanners, SDR, and related topics.

You’re the one who quoted my post and commented, and I just asked a simple question so I’m not sure what the big deal is.

Systems cost what they cost, depending on features and performance specs required by the department purchasing them. They put out a request for bids by vendors and choose the system they like best that meets their needs and budgets. Take up your budgetary concerns with the city council. Or better yet, create a new system that outperforms P25 at a lower cost, spend years fine tuning it and testing it, then go out and sell it. Easy, right?

Lmao. You clearly haven't been exposed to much digital radio, that's pretty much already been done and cities and towns across this country are choosing the "cheaper" option, as what was mentioned right here in this thread.

There is a lot of "fluff" in regards to the cost of P25. Just the licensing alone is ridiculous. It's no secret, everybody knows this.

Oh, so you're suggesting they abandon the system they already have massive amounts of money invested into that's nowhere near EOL and invest more money into a whole new system? That's very cost effective and budget conscious. Oh wait, it's not.

Huh? What are you talking about? Who said anything about abandoning systems?

Isn't the fire dept DMR? Clearly they chose the cheaper option lol!

Not trying to beat a dead horse lol but the fd's system is not much different from the pd's. Same radios just different modes and they can talk to each other fine. Over the summer on a separate frequency the pd was using dmr for traffic transmissions. I guess the fd just wanted the extra slots lol. It works fine I guess they can use P25 with a few minor changes if they really wanted to.
