Yesterday News 12 reported that the victim may have been shot before the fire. They were the only news outlet that carried the story that mentioned that. If that's the case, I would imagine the authorities aren't saying anything due to the ongoing investigation.

This is one of the stories from the Freehold Patch:

Neighbor Reports Fatality in Jackson Mills Road Incident
By Jacklyn Corley July 31, 2011

Several law enforcement departments and fire officials responde to the scene.

A neighbor of the 200 Jackson Mills Road residence that was the scene of a Sunday morning fire said an emergency services professional confirmed a fatality at the home to him. The neighbor, who requested anonymity, said a female in the home ran approximately 200 feet to seek help from another neighbor, who subsequently reported the incident to police.

When approached by a reporter, the second neighbor said he was unable to comment as he was asked to report to the Freehold Township Police Station to speak with the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

The Breaking News Network, which monitors police and fire radio traffic, reported a possible home invasion and fire at 200 Jackson Mills Road after 6 a.m.

The Freehold Township Police Department, Freehold Township Independent Fire Co. #1, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office, and the Monmouth County Medical Examiner were at the scene late into Sunday afternoon.

Police and fire officials would not comment on the nature of the incident, referring all questions to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

Stay tuned to Freehold Patch as news develops.

I can understand keeping the details to a minimum in an on-going investigation, but it sure sounds different than what you heard on the air.

Also, the story on the Asbury Park Press website made no mention of it being a murder/arson. However, it included a group of photos of investigators at the scene and the link on the main page was labeled Freehold Murder Fire or Freehold Fire Murder. Later in the day I noticed it had been changed to Freehold Fire.

From a story on the APP website today:

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — Homicide, arson and theft are now elements of the investigation surrounding the fire at a Jackson Mills Road residence where a body was found by firefighters early Sunday morning, the county prosecutor said today.

An autopsy performed on the body of the man found inside the home determined the manner of death is homicide, and investigators have determined the fire was deliberately set, said Monmouth County Prosecutor Peter E. Warshaw Jr.

“The fire in the house was deliberately set, and we believe the person or persons who set the fire also took a car that was in the garage,” he explained.

After reading the article it's starting to look a little clearer.

Just checked my feeds archive file on this incident. Neighbor reported that the male victim had been shot and 2 black males fled the scene in a Volkswagen that they owned. Having received this info Monmouth County initiated the MOCIB Zones with the description of the perps and the vehicle.

I heard the entire incident over several different frequencies and spoke to some friends in the know. A lot of details are being kept quiet, which is very obvious from the original APP and NJ news reports. I recall either hearing or reading that the white VW was recovered in northern NJ.

It will be interesting to read and hear the details when they are finally made available.

As far as a Home Invasion, I believe given the details Ive gathered this was much more of an isolated incident.
