I think the summer heat has cooked my touch screen on my home patrol 2 , it turns on and scans fine but the screen will not respond to touch correctly
( if I hit menu, the channel line locks ) is it worth fixing ??????

A couple of things to try..... I don't have my HP2 with me at the moment, just my HP1. I'm pretty sure this this works for both the HP1 & 2.

Slide a small thin piece of paper around the edge of the screen where the bezel overlaps the screen. Sometimes small particles can get stuck in there and put pressure on the screen.

If that doesn't offer any relief, try the following.

Again, I am pretty sure I have done this on my HP2 but that scanner is in another location at the moment. I am doing this on my HP1 as I type this.

You will be entering the factory test mode here, and be calibrating the touch screen response, so proceed from this point at your own risk. Don't make any changes in the following menus unless you are sure of what you are doing.

(1) Turn your scanner completely off. Be sure you are using a fully charged set of batteries.

(2) To power up the scanner in the test mode, hold down both the volume up (+) button and the power on button simultaneously until you just see the boot up splash screen. Immediately release those 2 buttons and quickly press and hold down the volume down (-) button until you see the "Test Mode" screen, then release the volume down button.

(3) With your screen out of calibration, you might need to try several times to successfully select the "calibration" button in the menu. If you select something else by mistake, look for a "back" or "menu" button to return to the "test mode" menu and try again. If you can't get back to the "test mode" screen, just hold down the power button as usual to turn off the scanner, then start at step 2 again.

(4) Once you have selected the "calibration" button, you will see small circles appear on the screen. Touch carefully and directly on the circles as they appear. (on the HP1 there are 5 circles to touch). The first 2 turn a very light yellow color after you touch them, and the next 3 show a small red dot where your touch was registered.

(5) After touching all of the calibration circles that appear, touch anywhere on the screen and then choose "Save" from the next page, or "re-try" if you want to repeat the calibration.

(6) After you click "Save", you will be back at the "Test Mode" menu. At this point, just shut down the scanner as you normally would.

Restart the scanner as you normally would, and see if the screen is now responding properly to your touch..

The repair fee for the homepatrol 2 is $89.95 with the return shipping (+$5 for Canada) which is significantly less than what you can sell or buy a used homepatrol 2 for. It's definitely worth repairing.

Here is a link on how to send it in for repair: Uniden - Online Repair Form

I would assume that 89.95 plus parts cost ?

From the Uniden Repair Site:

Flat rate service/repair charges are for out-of-warranty products and, in most cases, include all parts and labor necessary to bring your product back to the original specifications.

It's a flat rate repair fee. The cost is mostly to pay for the repair technician's time. Being the manufacturer has it's advantages when it comes to repair, foremost being that part costs are significantly lower.
