I hear alot of distorted stuff here in Brunswick County. There is definitely a difference/different sound when distorted vs. encrypted voice.....

I was down in Horry County a couple of times in the last few days (one time down Rt 31 south of Rt 501 and the other in the west Little River/North Myrtle Beach area). Each time, while driving on Rt 57 into South Carolina, my G4 was chatting away on the Horry County system (10 miles north of the South Carolina border) while the Uniden 436 wasn't picking up anything. The Uniden finally started receiving stuff once I got deeper into the county. I'd say there is either poor coverage on the north end or it's just nasty simulcast (probably the latter).
You were likely in between the North Myrtle Beach and Longs sites…and as you continued south, you were in the triangle of the North Myrtle Beach, Longs and Conway sites. There's an additional site in the Burgess area. I've found my Uniden x36 and TRX-x models are nearly useless while motoring around the entire eastern half of the county due to simulcast. Find a spot near a site and park…they work OK, although they are slower and miss some transmissions. The Unication G5 is so much better I've removed the others from both vehicles!
I usually have multiple radios (multiple vendors) going while driving -- between all of them, the Unication is clearly the winner on simulcast systems ... but it lacks the flexibility of a scanner (it's not a scanner!).
I programmed this system from the database on my 436, can't even seen control channel.

Yup - like most simulcast systems (of which this is one) - your reception on a scanner will vary greatly depending upon your location.
Not that it is any consolation but from inside my house near Holden Beach NC, I'm getting horrible reception of the NC Viper sites around me (which to my knowledge are not simulcast) on all of my radios (including the Unication G4). Clearly, this system is not designed for in-building coverage.
After my post I put scanner in the car and drove around, worked fine in some areas. We have a Simulcast system back in Delaware, close to a tower you sometimes have to turn on ATT but nothing like this. I tried turning on att but no luck. I'm staying a few miles north of the actual city.
Delaware is the mist of switching over to phase 1 by 2018, so they say. I haven't had very good luck with any p25 trunk system I've tried to scan.
Philly- never got it to work
Delaware first net- unconsitatly works
Md-firstnet seems to work nice only when your in the county you want to scan.

I haven't programmed the Palmetto system I was more interested in local Horry county while I'm here. Is there anything that can be done to improve reception on the 436? Anyone tried different antenna or no antenna, or is it just a hardware limitation.
