Hello all. My father and I would like to get ham licenses. We live in Albany and Plattsburg New york. So anywhere near either of these two areas will work. My father had a ham license back in the 50s when you had to know morse code but he let the license laps and wants to get a new one. Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Check the AARL web site to see if there is any tests in your area.
Do a web search and investigate where and when there is a test in your area.
Look for a club in your vicinity and go to a meeting.
There is no one there collecting any fees at the door and most clubs has free food after the meeting.

If your father had an amateur radio license (not a CB license) back in the fifties he took the exam at an FCC office unless he was disabled or lived more a couple hundred miles from the FCC place. Many years later the amateurs took over the administration of written and, when it was required, code testing.

Get the book or books from ARRL. There are also ham exam testing services for practice available on the internet so you can test yourself and when you go to take the actual test it will be very easy. There is no longer any code requirement for any ham license. When you're ready for your test you will be able to find a group who will administer the test; they're called "VEs" for Volunteer Examiners and if you ask around for VEs everyone will understand what you're looking for.

Good luck and welcome to what I and many others consider to be the best and most interesting hobby in the world.

73 (means "Best Regards" when sent in Morse Code.)

Here is a Power point study guide that might help -- TEARA VE Technician Study Guide. The questions are old, but the information is still good, it can help you. Also on this site, there are links to others sites that can help. There is a also HamTestOnline™, which is Hamtest online, it too will help. Also there is the ARRL books, the Tech book can be found at most local libraries, or can be bought for about $25.00 (to some degree it a good thing to have the book, just to have as a handy reference source.

Another thing is to take a lot of practice tests. Like eHam.net Ham Radio Practice Exams or QRZ.COM QRZ Ham Radio Practice Tests. There are of course other places online.

To some degree the Tech test is "fairly" easy, and hang in there, you will get it.
