How do you get alerted?

Just wondering how you all get alerted when there is severe weather. I know the NOAA weather radios are programmable so you can set your county, and when a warning or watch is put up it will alarm. Can you do this with digital scanners? Android app? I was thinking about buying a NOAA radio, but I know there is an alternative.

I get E-Mails from a news outlet, A text message from NWS, and I have WeatherBug that follows me around on my phone for when I'm out of the county...

Weatherbug isnt very practical as it doesn't update fast enough for warnings... Watches are another story however.

I use a r/s 20-249 weather receiver at home and a minitor V on our fire tone out freq.

I use StormNow. They send NWS products as emails or SMS text messages. I can slice and dice the products I get by county, by time of day/day of week, and by type of product. The cost depends on the delivery method and the number of products delivered. For me, it runs about $10/month.

I also have two Sangean CL-100 weather radios at home. Why two? I'm on the border between the coverage areas of two NWS transmitters. The transmitter that covers my county doesn't send SAME messages for the counties to my west. Since that's where most of our severe weather comes from, I like to know what's coming, so I have one CL-100 set up for my local transmitter and the other CL-100 for the transmitter to the west. Both are configured to wake me up in the middle of the night for an SVR or TOR for my county or the counties immediately west of me.

From what I am told the NOAA frequencies are not being Narrow banded.
A friend of mine said their taking old MINITOR II pagers and making them into "weather pagers"

Of course limited to the availability of Pager reeds.

I get alerted on the State of Ohio MARCS system, There is a talkgroup ID that is for the EAS activation. So I hear it on my radio about the same time it goes over the air on TV. Plus We coordinate severe weather reports on a couple EMA talkgroups, As well as directly with the national weather service forcasting office in Clevland Ohio on another talkgroup. I also have a weather receiver at home and in my office that tunes in the NOAA fips codes. For the most part though, I keep up on monitoring the weather through weather.com. So if I see a big chunk of storms comming, I've already got my radio's on the right channels to coordinate.

NIU has numerous campuses in IL. They have a very elaborate weather center there. They will send out emails for weather watches and warnings that originate from the National Weather Service. In my case, I have a cellphone that receives the emails. The delivery is remarkable in that sometimes I get the watch notifications before the NWS actually broadcasts it.

Yes - you have to stop scanning and put it in dedicated SAME alert mode though.

I think you mean before NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts it? NWS broadcasts the watch that NIU notifies you about, so it'd be impossible for NIU to have it before NWS sends it out on the feed

I use WeatherTap. It works ok. Alerts are not always on time. Radar is nice.

I like My-Cast. You can select a coverage area and have an E-mail sent for weather alerts. They also have some nice apps for cell phones.

I hate to admit it but our county uses Codespear. So I get all my watch warning info from there. I also use it to deploy our spotters.

Midland WR-100 radio on the nightstand, WeatherRadio app on the iPhone. SAME & Skywarn frequencies programmed in my PSR-800. During the June 1st tornado in Massachusetts, monitoring the Skywarn spotters was extremely helpful.

SMS text messages from The Weather Channel Alerts often will be delivered to my phone a few seconds before my NOAA weather radio goes off for severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings. It’s a free service and you can’t beat it for speed, IMO.

Our 440 linked repeater system here in eastern N.C. has a weather radio with SAME alert feature that activates during severe weather here. Works quite well.

I wish I was able to standby on specific SAME alerts while in regular scan mode with the 396XT. I can have it scan & alert on tones but it alerts for everything which is a HUGE pain. I dropped that out of the 396XT & just have an old Pro-94 on standby in weather alert mode. It'll alert the same times the 396XT would but w/o interrupting the scanning of the 396XT so it's not my ideal situation but it works for now. One of these years since I can program Minitors I'll finally scrap the Pro-94 & eBay a 160's Minitor IV or V to use instead.
