Checked my notes when I did this evaluation a while back with my BCD436HP:

Using Powerex Pro 27000mAh AA cells under the following conditions:

Vol = 6
Battery Save = on
Display (squelch mode) = dimmest setting
Keyboard light = off
Held on P25 very active system

Battery life = 12 hours, 3 mins.

Vol = 6
Battery save = off
Display/keyboard = high (infinite setting)
Held on P25 very active system

Battery life = 10 hours, 19 mins.

If you don't need record features, get a USB battery pack and correct cable to listen for 24 hours. Best to get 2 as it talks almost all day to recharge one. Am using one now on my 325P2. Did use one on my 436 when I had it.

6 hours sounds about right in my experience. I always have power save on too. If you hold on a channel that isn't busy it probably lasts much longer than that.

Also depends on the age of the batteries especially if rechargeable. I can still get about 3 to 4 hours of use from a set of rechargeable AA NiMH's about 5 years old. I charge them externally

You really need to have a smart charger that displays the actual mAh capacity on a discharge cycle.

NiMHs do age and their capacity declines with usage, they can also "go south" for a variety of reasons.

Also, even the big brand NiMHs I've used are generally crap.

Stick to Eneloops/Powerex NiMH cells (both are manufactured by the same company and are the gold standard.
I've also had good success with Amazon Basics brand NiMH cells.

If it still is true... The Amazon NiMh batt's come from Japan...

It's not, they're now manufactured in China.
However, I've several smart chargers and they perform to spec., in fact, if anything Amazon under reports their capacity.
For example, the Amazon Basic Brand D-cells, rated at 10,000mAh, actually reported a capacity of around 12,500mAh when I evaluated them via a discharge cycle.

By contrast EBL D-cells, rated at 10,000 mAh, clocked in at an actual capacity of around 7,500 mAh.

You got that right with the EBL cells...

Back when I had a landline phone still I ran the amazon 's in my cordless phones...
When I got them the box said made in Japan... That was along time ago though...

EBL claim some of their AAs have a capacity of 2800mAh.

It's total BS, they have an actual capacity of around 2500 mAh.

The highest capacity current NiMH technology is capable of is 2700mAh for AAs and only Powerex makes AAs that are accurately rated for 2700mAh and they're more expensive than generic NiMH AAs.

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop ?? We may never know.

Your experience on your Radio and channels is going to be totally different from someone else.
All depends on how active the network/channels are, do you have alerts, colors etc
wait, wait...wait...you mean 5/5/90 isn't authoritative?!

Yup, every tongue is different.

I was getting about 8 hours with brand new Ladda (Ikea)

That information I think is a little out of date.
Amazon recently appeared to revamp their NiMH line of batteries.
Whether that revamping was cosmetic or not I don't know.

Good grief there's a major cop chase involving cars and choppers currently happening from one of my scanners!

Powerex are very good batt's... Havn't used them in awhile...
Used to get them from a place called "Thomas Distributing"... No longer in business though...
They don't have the Low Self Discharge capabilty but that point is moot when they get used alot and not sitting around for six or more months before use...

I've also bought batteries from Thomas Distributing in the past, didn't know they are no longer in business.

NiMHs thrive on constant usage.
They're like muscles, if you don't use them they can become weak and seem to lose their ability to take a full charge.
