Hello,

I've read the manual and I've read the awesome stuff at CRRC Home Page, and I still don't get how to define scan edges. All I want to do to scan the two predominant ranges of analog frequencies in the area (146.865 -173.26250 and 443.17500- 464.32500). The folks at CharlesRiverRC say how to scan edges, but not how to define them; and the manual has this to say about it:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The scanning range can be set to all frequencies (full scan), a
selected band or between two user-programmed frequencies
(programmed scan).

The programmed scan edges can be programmed in the
same manner as programming regular memory channels.

Program the desired scan edge frequencies in a pair of
programmed scan edge channels in advance. (pgs. 12, 13)

--Select VFO mode with [V/M].

--While pushing [FUNC], push [BAND] to enter band edge
set mode.

____________I get confused here_______________
-- Rotate [DIAL] to select the desired scan edge.

--“ALL” for full scan, “BAND” for band scan or “PROG 0” –
“PROG24” for programmed scan.
___________End confusion______________________

[So it appears I am choosing what kind of edge to scan here. But at what point do I enter the frequencies?]

-- Push [BAND] to exit band edge set mode; or push [FUNC]

-- [Y] or [Z] momentarily to start the programmed scan
using the selected edges.

When scanning across the band as below (programmed
scan edges are set across the band), the parameters like
tuning step, receive mode, offset frequency, duplex direction,
etc. are used in each bands’ VFO settings instead of
these scan edges.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Can some one shine some light on this?

Thanks.

I have programmed scan edges on the R-5. The programming on the R-2 does sound similar to the R-5. I don't have the receiver with me right now and it has been a few years since I last did it. When I get home I will get the receiver out along with the manual and refresh my memory. Then maybe we can shed some light on it.
In the mean time maybe someone else will chime in that has an R-2.

I pulled up the pdf file for the R-2 manual and maybe we can help you out now. I think you need to rotate the dial(step 3 in the manual) to select PROG0-PROG24. This is 25 programmable scan edges. The BAND selection is already pre-programmed as shown at the right on the page. The ALL selection will scan all frequencies throughtout the receiver.
Once you select PROG0-PROG24 this should allow you to program your scan edges.
i.e.
PROG0a=146.865....PROG0b=173.2625,
PROG1a=443.175....PROG1b=464.3250;

where a: lower scan edge
b:upper scan edge

The R-5 has a more detailed instruction on programming scan edges but the button layout is different. You will have to rotate the dial to the scan edge(0a) then rotate the dial for the lower frequency to be entered into scan edge(0a) and so on. Here are the R-5 instructions, maybe you can translate them to the R-2 :

Scan edges can be programmed in the same manner as
memory channels. Scan edges are programmed into scan
edges, 00A/00B to 24A/24B, in memory channels.
qPush [V/M•S.MW•~] to select VFO mode.
wSet the desired frequency:
➥ Select the desired band with [BAND• ].
➥ Set the desired frequency with [DIAL].
➥ Set other data (e.g. offset frequency, duplex direction, tone
squelch, etc.), if desired.
ePush [V/M•S.MW•~] for 1 sec. to select select memory
write condition.
• 1 short and 1 long beeps sound.
• “ ” indicator and memory channel number blink.
rRotate [DIAL] to select the desired programmed scan edge
channel from 00A to 24A.
tPush [V/M•S.MW•~] for 1 sec.
• 3 beeps sound
• The other scan edge channel “B,” 00B to 24B, automatically selected
when continuing to push [V/M•S.MW•~] after programming.
yTo program a frequency for the other pair of scan edges,
00B or 24B, repeat steps w and r.
• If the same frequency is programmed into a pair of scan edges,
programmed scan will not function.
[V/M•S.MW•~]
[DIAL]

Good Luck'
