does VOX mode need to be on or off? Also I'm still not hearing anything but there is radio traffic on the frequency because I can hear it on broadcastify.
Vox allows you to automatically key up the transmitter just by speaking into a mic.
You'll want that turned off for now.

Do you happen to know how far you are from the actual transmitter you are hearing on broadcastify?

Also, send me a link to that broadcastify page please.

I got one frequency working but the other I can’t hear from and it has N on it which the other one doesn’t

The "N" indicates that it's set for narrow band operation. Find bandwidth in the menu and change it to "W".

Yep, vox off for now.

Let's put some other local frequencies in there and see how things work.

If you don't mind, could you tell us what state and city or town you are in?

If you'd rather not that's ok.

Can you find what frequency is for the Norfolk Southern Rathole (Cincinnati Ohio to Danville Kentucky) or a local frequency for Covington Kentucky

Ok, I think the broadcastify link may shed some light on things.

If you scroll down on that page you'll see where it says:

"Located east of Faulkner Road in Danville, KY along US 27"

So, if you are in Covington and the feed provider is in Danville, that's a distance of around 100 miles.
It is highly unlikely that you would be able to pick up the same VHF transmissions that he can receive at his location.
And vice versa, he wouldn't be able to hear what you can at your location.

That is one of the great features of broadcastify.
It allows you to monitor distant stations that you would never otherwise be able to pick up, thanks to the feed providers.

And to answer your earlier comment about the green light going out when you set the squelch above zero....
It's supposed to go out and only come on when it is receiving something.
However, the presence of the green light does not necessarily ALWAYS indicate the presence of voice traffic.
It will come on if you set the set the squelch to zero, even though there is no traffic whatsoever.
So if you had the squelch on zero and saw the green light, that's probably what it was.
It will also come on if it is picking up static, or interference or digital communications.
So just beware.

So now we need to focus on why you aren't getting the same local frequencies that your friend is getting.
Does he perhaps have an external antenna hooked to his scanner while you are using a 'rubber duck' for example?

In the meantime, I'm trying to locate some frequencies for you to try.

A lot of things have changed with the Rathole over the past few years, including what frequencies they use.
As someone said "Gone are the days of just being able to listen to 160.950 MHz and pick up just about everything"

In case you haven't seen this yet, here's some information you might find useful:

Norfolk Southern

Kentucky Lines

The Central Division has been abolished, with lines in Kentucky divided between the Lake and Illinois Divisions.

First District CNO&TP - Cincinnati, OH to Danville, KY (Lake Division)
Second District CNO&TP - Danville, KY to Oakdale, TN (Lake Division)
Harrodsburg District - Danville, KY to Talmage, KY (Lake Division)
Louisville District - Talmage, KY to Louisville, KY (Illinois Division)

160.245/160.830 half-duplex has been phased out for communications between dispatcher and train.
Lines are being shifted to a road channel / dispatcher channel configuration similar to CSX and other railroads.

160.275161.235WPFN926RMCSQAAR 011/075NS ARN (Administrative Radio Net)FMNRailroad

I would say make sure you have all of those frequencies in your radio and set PL to zero and use FM Narrow on all of them.
Try that and see what you get.

As far as a local frequency for Covington Kentucky...

Radio reference says:
"All Fire agencies in Kenton County are dispatched on the 154.190 fire net".
That's BOUND to be pretty busy.
I would try that frequency.
Make sure CTCSS is set to zero and use FM Narrow.
