I was going to post about this on Scan Maritimes, but that site seems to be offline, yet again. So I'll post here.
An article in the Metro a couple of days ago says HRFE is looking to start charging for fire inspections for bars and daycares. However the interesting part of the article is this bit at the end:
http://metronews.ca/news/halifax/60...-fees-for-fire-inspections-for-daycares-bars/
So just to add some station numbers to that, they're suggesting the following stations close:
32 Mooseland
37 Elderbank
51 Upper Hammonds Plains
53 Terrence Bay
61 Ketch Harbour
Now I don't know the western areas of HRM that well (I grew up in the eastern area) so I can't comment much on stations 53 and 61. It seems to make sense to me to look at closing station 51. I'm not really sure why a large station (four bay garage) was built out there, when station 50 should be more than adequate to handle it.
Station 37 doesn't get paged out too often, it's a stones throw from station 36 in Meagher's Grant and frankly, it looks like it's falling apart. If they were to keep it open, I think they would need to do some major work on it in the next few years, possibly a complete re-construction like they did with station 35 (Cooks Brook) a couple of years ago.
Now station 32. This one is just funny. Well it definitely confirms the fact that I can't remember the last time I heard the station paged, or a truck on the road! A lot of us figured it was closed already. If it doesn't have any volunteers, and hasn't rolled in 3 years, it's not a loss. Makes me ask the question though, does the station still have a truck assigned to it, or is it just an empty building..

Trussler also told the committee the department wants to close down five rural sub-stations in order to save $80,000 this year.
Trussler said the substations – Mooseland, Terence Bay, Elderbank, Upper Hammonds Plains and Ketch Harbour – are “underutilized,” noting Mooseland hasn’t responded to a call in three years.
“These stations have no operational volunteers directly assigned to them…it will have a negligible effect on emergency response,” he said. “Basically they add no value to our service.”
