To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello, I am attempting to program a Motorola HT 1250 and I am having problems.

I have access a Windows 10 Desktop 64 bit, a Windows 7 Laptop(Toughbook), and a MacBook Pro running latest OS).

I have the fancy USB no rib box cable, and I have tried the cable on my Win 7 laptop and my Win 10 desktop. The cable works fine on my windows 10 desktop(installs all the drivers, but then when I go to the software. It gives me an error saying to check my connection to the radio and such. So that is the first problem.

My second problem is with the Toughbook running win7, when I plug the cable into a USB port it does not even recognize that a cable was plugged in.

So if anyone has any ideas, let me know.

Thank you!
Kyle

You may need to change the comm port setting in the software, I had that same problem and I had to change it to comm port 7 on my PC for the USB to work

Edit: did it work for you on windows 10? If not, which OS?

Yes. On your PC you can modify it via the device manager. Look at the assigned port and make sure it aligns with CPS, if not then change it to a lower port and match them.

There should be a thread else where on this, I don't recall what last said they used but I last used vista, XP on those back in day. Also you need to be sure in anything g under Windows 7 and below the correct ftdi, prolific chip version is used.

Also select your Com port, unplug it, then plug it back in go back into the settings for port and see if there is 2 options for say for example usb, or Com port 3 etc. I had a few versions of Vista not want to read but it had 2 Com port 3s in there and after selecting the extra one in the menu to read from it worked. Double check that.

It's probably in that case a driver or there is 2 drivers of prolific in the Com port 3 and why the issue I had then.

Double check that though. I also believe you need 32 bit not 64 is for those unless the final version 6.x allowed 64 bit I don't recall the notes on it back then.

What cable are you using?

I use a valley enterprise radio/ UDC to serial cable with a parallax serial to usb adapter.

The parallax ser-usb Model is the USBto232.

Using 32 and 64 bit win7 and win8.1 on 3 pc's, one pc is a panasonic laptop32 bit win7, 2nd is a toshiba laptop win8.1 64 bit and finally a dell venue8-pro minitablet, win8.1 32 bit.

I used to have an xp desktop which also worked fine a few years ago.

All 3 pc's have programmed my 220 MHz ht1250LS+ for years without any issues.

I opted for the valley ent. udc-serial radio cable with the parallax serial - usb adapter setup because of others stories about radio udc-usb issues.

Professional CPS will work just fine on a Windows 7 32 or 64 BIT system. You’ve likely got a bad cable or a missing driver. If you can’t get an OEM cable, then make sure you at least have a cable with an FTDI chipset. Prolific cables sometimes will not play nice with Motorola software.

Not sure why it does not even show up on my windows 7 device manager but is showing up on my windows 10 device manager, but on windows 10 I can't read the device.

Well, I don't think the cable is bad because it shows up on my windows 10 computer. I have the drivers, but it just doesn't show up in device manager on my windows 7 Toughbook.

Any ideas for trouble shooting?

I would recommend trying a different cable. Specifically an FTDI cable. There’s no indication the cable you’re using is FTDI. It’s also a low cost cable and likely Prolific. You can try reinstalling the driver and see if that works. Other than that, the only thing I can recommend is getting a better cable.

If you want later I can dig around the drivers I have and maybe you can try one of them.

The tricky thing is many cables use older hardware that does work but requires a older driver. I forgot the latest ftdi and prolific but you would want the latest. The in go is out there I just don't have the links.

Many vendors selling don't know what the hardware is unless they are told or ask or it states on the cable usb label side.

Also stay away from the fake ftdi and prolific sets out there which are still plentiful lingering around. There is a ftdi and prolific chip checker at their respective sites.

I'll add that if you have an older version of the programming software it likely won't work with a USB port or any of the newer operating systems.
What is your CPS version?
