To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Nope, just hook it up, make sure the RIB has power and hit Read. It should ask you the first time what com port to use so make the proper selection then. If it doesn't and you suspect it's not looking on the right port, go to File then Read Device and it'll ask for the com port.

That's what it sounds like to me too. Sorry, I've not had a similar problem.

Read and Save!

First, read the radio and save the codeplug BEFORE you attempt any changes. Make that a habit everytime. After you make changes, hit the SAVE option. Now then, after you have all your connections set up, read the radio. I use the same type of cable you have. What operating system are you using? Are your com ports set up correctly?

You need to see what port Windows assigned it. It wont go to the same port every time, especially if there is something else assigned there already. Check in CPS if there is a USB option in the com port selection (not likely, depending on version).

It could be that the radio was written with a newer version of CPS since the one you have is quite old. Current is R06.12.09. Unfortunately, you won't receive a "codeplug too new for this application" error, it simply won't work and may send the error that you're seeing.

We've chewed on this a number of times before. Pro Series CPS R06.12.05 was specifically released to address Win 7 problems. That, and any newer versions should run fine on Win 7.

I paid $200 for the radio, moto wants $300 for the software, I may just ship it off to a dealer for programming. Thanks

Jim,

I've made that suggestion to a number of folks over the past year or two. Typical programming cost is about $30 to $50 depending on complexity and number of channels. While you have some experience with an earlier version of the CPS, many others don't. As you know, the software isn't as user friendly as it could be, and there's a steep learning curve. For many owners of this type of equipment, paying for programming, even two or three times, is still much more economical that purchasing the CPS, and if needed, the cabling.

Plug in the cable, open the software, connect to the radio, turn the radio on, click on File and then Read Device. It should give you a little window with a drop-down which will have you select the Com Port. Once you have done that, it should read the radio.

That usually solves the problem. You have to do it in that order without skipping a step or taking any other shortcuts.

One other thing, when you install 6.12.05, be sure that it removes the older version OR when you fire it up, be double sure you have the newer version running (if you want to keep the older version on your computer.)

I think you already mentioned it, but you should have the latest Prolific driver set installed as well. I found that it worked best for me when I removed all the USB drivers on my machine and then installed the Prolific set.

Are you using a USB cable or a USB to Serial adapter and a Serial cable?
