I'll be heading to Dallas tomorrow, and I'm assuming the way to run an SDS is to attach the gps and let it determine what to tune, according to my service selections. I'll definitely have law and transportation on, but is there anything in another service that's interesting on this drive? I'll probably have ems, corrections, and interop on as well.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I would make sure that you activate the tactical & talk service types in addition to dispatch for law, fire, EMS, & multi- service types.

We're having periods of freezing rain, alternating with sleet and snow, so the roads are slippery, especially on bridges. What's liquid at present will be black ice tomorrow morning, until the temp goes up enough to start melting. Depending on exactly where you are, you may see mostly sleet or freezing rain at present, but later tonight it's projected to change to snow only. Timeline from one of the local media outlets here. There is a ground stop on flights from DFW Airport due to the icing. Was supposed to expire at 5pm, but now extended to 7pm.

It likely would activate more than you want, but TxDOT road crews use the Public Works service type, as do a couple of "ice ops" TGIDs on NTIRN for the city of Dallas.

Do you have the DMR upgrade? A number of the TxDOT frequencies are DMR. What you might consider is appending the TxDOT channels to a Favorites list, and edit the service types to "Custom 1" or "Custom 2", so that you could include them without bogging down on Public Works channels for every city & county that you go through. For TxDOT, it's mostly one or two channels per channel, so it would not take long to edit the service types, including only the counties that you'll pass through.

I don't run a GPS on my SDS200, I have a "HOU to DFW" Favorites List that includes the counties between the areas along I-45. Basically it is

Quick Key Site

1 Harris Co TxWARN
2 Houston TxWarn
3 Montgomery Co TxWarn
4 Walker Co TxWarn
5 Madison Co TxWarn
6 Leon Co
7 Freestone Co
8 Navarro Co
9 Ellis Co NTIRN
10 Dallas NTIRN (layers 1 and 2)
11 Fort Worth NTIRN (layers 1 and 2)

Import what you want to listen to, and no hassle with GPS. I use ProScan to program.

I just turn the systems on and off as I travel thru them.

To add to what Steve said, I'd enable "Interop" service types also. In my travels all around Texas I've heard TxDOT on the 700 Interop frequencies in simplex.

ETA...Went back through my notes, specifically 7GTAC57D (770.99375) is where I've heard them several times working road closures.
