In an age when one thought that HF public safety communications was all but over with, Humboldt County decides if their radios won't work in certain areas, this new system will should do the trick.

I'd be surprised if this application were granted, particularly for 1 kW ERP. The FCC rules generally limit public safety SSB licenses to state agencies and for emergency management, not law enforcement.

Beyond that, working an SSB is not a simple as working an FM set. And there are no 1 kW mobiles and no handhelds at all.

Finally, a use for all that good used free HF gear you can get from the local DOD/DRMO.

This is interesting, but useless, I am not buying the stated use.

Anyone have any creative ideas on unstated uses?I am not really an HF kinda -guy does 3.201mhz have any significance?

The county, while it is large and mountainous, has very reliable multi-repeater VHF radio systems for both the Sheriff's Department and for the County Public Works, both of which are monitored 24/7.

The real problem is that our DA here in Humboldt County is an incompetent nitwit; that's what's going on. He recently got the Eureka Chief of Police and their SWAT Commander indicted for Involuntary Manslaughter in connection with a standoff with a mental case that ended up getting herself killed by the SWAT team after she barricaded herself and then pulled a flare gun on them when they went in. The Judge just threw the indictment out this week:

He's also currently trying the Chief of Police of Blue Lake (who himself is a goofball) for allegedly raping his wife once a month for two years while she was taking sleeping pills; she was a Sgt on the same department, and is recanting everything she says she was coerced into telling deputies:

And about a year ago he demanded eight AR-15s for his handful of investigators:

If you didn't see it, here's the DA's "justification" for the 3.201 Mhz radios:

And just when I thought this Gallegos guy couldn't get any goofier.

Fun Times in Humboldt.

We HAVE to have 3.201Mhz- no other sustandard frequency will do. None of that 3.301 or 2.901Mhz for us damnit. We only use the high-speed, low drag 3.201- now give it to us or my people will die and I will get you indicted. Hahaaha.

You have to wonder if someone suggested VHF-Low and some office minion screwed things up. Seems like Humboldt used to be on 45.xxx mhz not but circa 20 years ago or so. Perhaps a faulty memory of how great those systems were is in play......

I've been reading about the whole Gallegos/Blue Lake Gunderson thing. Fun times. I agree- Gallegos appears to be a true retard (no offense to retards).

I had a few contacts with Gunderson several years ago in the course of a collateral duty project. Did not seem like a weird eddie. Never had him over for dinner either though. My contact was limited -who knows- but sounds half-bogus to me. Seems like there is a divorce or something as a factor in the blue lake thing also cant recall.

Someone needs to check the water at the courthouse- there is something in it. If there is not, then there should be. Something SRI'ish like Prozac-ish perhaps.

Best,
Mike

That place is ground zero for Humboldt GOLD. Somebody musta been smoking too much of the local wacky tabacky and put the decimal in the wrong place. I almost died laughing in reading about that dopey district attorney. A Gallegos associate moved to Santa Cruz and tried to get elected DA down there on his pot platform in the 90s. Does the name Ed Frey ring bells...

License Issued

The FCC granted the license on 9/17/2008, WQJI212 - http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSearch/license.jsp?licKey=3043789, with the Special Condition that "Licensee may only employ radio equipment of a type certified to operate under Part 90 of the FCC Rules." There go any hopes of using some homebrew equipment. One base, one mobile, 1000w ERP.

On VHF, the half-handful of times I've ever heard a peep out of them in 17 years of listening, they used "7K-xx" ID numbers. Who knows what they'll use if and when...

The US Coast Guard is on 3.126 mhz USB. Humboldt county should have a much bigger potential audience than they planned for in the first place. A night time or early sunrise drug raid will blast all over the western United States just like KGO...
